To Regift or Not to Regift, That is the Question
You know you have done it. Do not worry, I will not tell.
Did you know the term regifting didn't exist before 1995? It was first used in the January 19, 1995 "Label Maker" episode on Seinfeld. In the episode, Elaine and Jerry think their friend Whatley is a regifter because Jerry received a label maker from Whatley that Elaine gave him for Christmas. To regift is to give a gift to someone after it was given as a gift to you. Between you and me, there are many websites and articles that address the "how to" and the "dos and don'ts"— even the ethics of regifting. My mother used to regift treasures she sorted at a local thrift shop. She had first refusal of items brought in...you know, pick of the litter! But the best was one Xmas when she gave my husband a pair of swim trunks. Used, clean, neatly wrapped. And the back story was she found them in the road the previous summer, obviously lost off someone's antenna....   more ›
