Staying small gives Fenner a big edge in customer service.
10 Questions, Shoot! Q: What did you dream of being as a kid? When I was little, I wanted to be a nurse. That was before I found sailing. Then I wanted to sail around the world. When I was graduating from college, Hood Sailmakers found a copy of my resume which had accidentally been put into their printing order and they called and asked me if I wanted a job. I said no, because I had made a commitment to teaching sailing at Hyannis Yacht Club, where I had grown up. My father always made us work on our own boats if we wanted to sail, that was the deal, so that's how I got into working on boats. Q: How does your personality play into your business? I'm friendly, outgoing, and honest. My business slogan is "Your boat is my resume" …

Inspired by her students, Friedman keeps her dance studio family-oriented.
10 Questions, Shoot! Q: What did you dream of being as a kid? This was the toughest question! I partially dreamed of being a dancer and a teacher, but I can’t say there was really anything specific—it was a long time ago! Q: How does your personality play into your business? I was teaching public school, doing a lot of after-school dance programs, and I also taught a dance class during the summer for the Barnstable parks and recreation department. I was encouraged by all the parents who wanted me to do more than the summer classes, and it just snowballed from there. Q: …

Despite growing competition,Taylor's unique gym pays off for women who are both novices and experts in the world of fitness.
10 Questions, Shoot! What did you dream of being as a kid? Horses were my life for most of my childhood and I dreamed of somehow making that my life but as I got older I was more interested in being part of the medical profession. Owning and operating a women’s fitness center never once popped into my head as a child. How does your personality play into your business? I love things organized, and the mistake many owners make in the fitness business is to rely just on the workout component. This business is a strong mix of fitness, service and managing details. At what moment did you decide to open a business? I was working out in a local club that came up for sale. I loved the idea of helping women be successful. At that time, and even …
