A sinkhole in a North St. Parking lot appeared behind Puritan Clothing Wednesday.
Barnstable officials inspected the four-foot sinkhole Wednesday afternoon, according to the Cape Cod Times. Crews used a jackhammer to stabilize the sinkhole, widening it to 12 to 14 feet and 10 feet deep. Crews turned off a nearby gas line as a precaution, filled the hole with sand, and blocked off the area. Water from a nearby drainage pipe could be to blame. Will Kadunc, from the Department of Public Works, told the Cape Cod Times the water may have compacted the sand under the pavement creating the sinkhole.
