Great Escape: Get Lost in (Discount) Literature

Every Wednesday, Patch finds a way for you to unplug and recharge.

Remember spending hours on your couch, engrossed in a book, getting up only to refresh your coffee or warm your tea? Remember reading faster than your brain could keep up, only because you wanted to flip the page and find out what happened next? And now every other paragraph finds you getting a juice cup or changing a diaper, helping with homework or flipping the burgers. So maybe getting lost in literature isn’t as free as it used to be, but, now that the days are getting lighter for longer, send your kids to the playground with Grandma and head over to Tim’s Used Books, on Main Street in Hyannis. Tim’s spacious floor offers you ample selection for leisurely browsing and for reconnecting with lost literary loves. In the owner’s own words…

Great Escape: Good, Cheap Massage

Every Wednesday, Patch finds a great escape so you can unplug and recharge.

You’re pretty sure that if you have to come up with one more dinner idea, you are going to combust. Or if you have another brush-your-teeth-pick-up-your-toys war, someone is going to send the Super Nanny to your house. Don't even get started about your boss or the office gossip artist. With family and home comes stress, with work comes stress and with stress comes stress. Imagine if you could do something for yourself every week that would take that stress away and return you to your family and work a much more relaxed, much less hunched person. Wouldn’t that be great? How about a massage every week? The average hour massage is $80. Multiply that by four weeks and all of a sudden you’re defaulting on the student loans you’re still paying …

Great Escape: Rock It Out

Every Wednesday, Patch will bring you a Great Escape so you can unplug and recharge.

Car rides, sleepovers, pizza nights and movies. You’ve just survived another SVW (school vacation week). Now it’s your turn, and the Cotuit Center for the Arts has got your ticket. Call your best friend and leave the kids with a baby-sitter (or maybe cash in on a favor from your spouse), and get rockin’. On Friday, March 4, Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will get you dancing with their blues-infused hoedown. According to the Cotuit Arts Center website, the band “…has evolved through many incarnations, trips around the world as far as South Africa and mostly the joys of playing a lot of music on Martha’s Vineyard where most of them live. Johnny came to the Island in 1978, after soaking up Muddy Waters’ and Tom Waits’ shows as a teenager. He’ll…

Great Escape

Every Wednesday, Patch will bring you a Great Escape so you can unplug and recharge.

It’s school vacation week and your daughter is having the time of her life - at someone else’s house. Your son is ice skating at the local rink and your spouse is meeting with your tax preparer (one of the perks of having kids, right?). Do something simple and treat yourself to a bunch of spring-beckoning Dutch tulips, at Trader Joe’s for $4.99 per bunch. They are selling a variety of colors, and at $5, you can get several colors.  After that, pop into Christmas Tree Shop next door, and pick up an inexpensive glass vase. Take your purchases home, which is still pleasantly uninhabited. Put your tulips in the vase with some flower food and some water, and place said vase somewhere that you will most appreciate the blooms, like maybe next to …

Great Escape

Every Wednesday, Patch will bring you a Great Escape to unplug and recharge.

Maybe eight in the morning isn’t when you have the most me-time, but with free yoga offered every Wednesday at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center, you might find a way.  The classes focus on Hatha yoga, which is designed to promote kindness and compassion and emphasizes gentle a gentle approach, which is great for beginner students and those seeking low-impact exercise.  Yoga is known to reduce anxiety, relieve back pain, improve circulation, aid in weight loss and so much more.  So maybe one Wednesday every month, your spouse can go into work late or your awesome neighbor can stand at the bus stop with your kids, and you can enjoy a free hour of “in with the good and out with the bad.” Another stress reducer? Finding money-saving …
