Pilgrim Station operators are investigating what's being called a minor leak in a safety relief valve.
Pilgrim Station technicians are investigating the cause of a leak in a safety relief valve, which prompted the shutting down of the plant early Monday morning, plant officials said. Operators manually shut down the plant at 5:45 a.m. to investigate what's being called "a minor leak associated with a pilot valve on one of the plant’s four safety relief valves," according to a release from Entergy spokesman Carol Wightman. "The plant is in a safe, stable condition and there is no threat to public safety." The plant will remain shut down until "a thorough evaluation of the shutdown is conducted and any necessary repairs are made." Entergy's contract with 62 tech workers at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant expires at midnight tonight (Wednesday) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is ensuring that the plant is prepared in case of a strike or lockout. "Because of the possibility of a walkout or lockout, we have completed our review of the company’s strike contingency plans and found them to be acceptable," NRC Public Affairs Officer Neil Sheehan said in an email today. "We have also developed our own contingency plan, which details how we would respond to a strike affecting the site. Enhanced oversight is always an element of our contingency plans." Union members and politicians are rallying today on the State House steps, urging Entergy to offer better health care options and ensure safe working conditions at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. According to a UWUA Local 369 spokesman, the scheduling of today's rally is ironic because of today's Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act. Krista Robinson of O'Neill and Associates, the publicity firm representing the union said: It’s ironic that on a historical day when the Supreme Court has ruled to uphold healthcare, this Louisiana based company is set to rip healthcare benefits away from workers.
