Sea Turtles Stranded on Cape Cod Ready to be Released

Forty-six endangered sea turtles rescued off of Cape Cod last fall in a record-smashing stranding season are now ready for release in northeast Florida late Sunday morning.

The following was provided by the National Marine Life Center. These sea turtles are the last group of the record 242 sea turtles that washed up on Massachusetts’s beaches due to hypothermia last November and December. Cold-stunned sea turtles strand in the late fall on Cape Cod. Early Saturday morning the National Marine Life Center (NMLC) in Buzzards Bay prepared four charcoal-colored Kemp’s ridleys for an hour and a half ride north to Quincy. There, they joined twenty-eight more from the Aquarium’s sea turtle hospital to begin the Sea Turtle Trek’s long drive south.  The Sea Turtle Trek will give the turtles to officials from Florida Fish & Wildlife that Sunday morning. The group will select a release beach in the region, and forty-…

What You Need to Know about Coyotes on Cape Cod

This month several Patch readers reported coyote sightings, we tell you what to do if you see one and how to keep your pets safe.

Charlie Lewis, the Senior Animal Control Officer for the Town of Barnstable, said coyote populations grow when there is an abundance of food.  While coyote populations are in a downward trend right now, it’s breeding season and that could soon change. “Coyote pups are born in April or May so June is the time we generally receive more sighting and complaints,” Lewis said. Owners should avoid feeding any animals outside and bird feeders should have spill shields so any seed spilled out is caught before it hits the ground. Food sitting outside is a draw for mice, moles, chipmunks and others which then themselves are a draw for coyotes.  Lewis said owners should never allow their pets to roam free. “I encourage owners to limit dusk to dawn tie…

For a quick meal I prefer both Coyote and Plover lightly seasoned and grilled... But my favorite recipe is when I skewer and bread my plovers, then deep fry.... I call them “Plover Pops” …. Very yummy, I can't get enough of 'em!! ;)   more ›

Rare Right Whales Sighted Near Martha's Vineyard

Eight endangered right whales have been spotted recently in the waters around Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket and mariners are being asked to slow down for the marine mammals' safety.

Once the prey of Martha's Vineyard whalers whose owners' homes still stand today, right whales have remained an endangered species long after the American whaling industry shut down. There may be as few as 400 right whales remaining on the planet, and eight of them have been seen near Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in recent days, according to NOAA. "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a voluntary vessel speed reduction zone until March 1, asking mariners to avoid the area or travel through at less than 10 knots," in an effort to protect the whales from shipstrikes, writes Boston Globe reporter Billy Baker. For more about right whales, please see: Have you ever spotted right whales in Cape and Islands waters? …

Chance of Snow this Weekend

Some areas of Massachusetts could see another foot of snow this weekend, but forecasters are predicting only 1 to 3 inches on the Cape.

Once again, the snow is melting. But once again, don't put the shovels away. Because once again, the weekend is bringing us more snow. A new snowstorm is headed towards the Bay State Saturday and Sunday, and some areas could see up to 12 inches of new snow before it's done. On his blog, WHDH meteorologist Pete Bouchard is calling for light rain along the coast Saturday with snow inland and snow everywhere by Sunday morning. Bouchard is predicting accumulations of 1 to 3 inches on the Cape. There could also be a chance for coastal flooding in some areas.
