What Everyone Ought to Know about Cape Cod Canal Fishing

When it comes to Cape Cod Canal fishing, there are a few things you really ought to know before casting a line. Get these tips down pat, and you will put yourself in a good position to catch a big striped bass.

Cape Cod Canal fishing is one of the most challenging and rewarding types of fishing along the entire East Coast of the United States. Few locations on earth offer the shore bound angler a better chance at hooking a bass in the 40 pound range. This man-made land cut has produced spectacular fishing the past few seasons. Fishing the Cape Cod Canal during the spring run of big striped bass has been just as impressive, if not more impressive than the famed autumn migration. If this past spring is anything like the spring of 2013, impressive schools of trophy size striped bass should enter the canal starting in May.  Timing is Everything The canal will support a population of striped bass from May through October.  But to really cash in on …

How to Understand Canal Tides for Big Canal Bass

Strong tides and a relentless current help make the Cape Cod Canal a magnet for all sorts of marine life. If you are looking to catch a big striped bass, then it can pay to understand how tides work at the "Big Ditch."

The Cape Cod Canal has some of the strongest tides on all of Cape Cod. The West (ebb) Tide An outgoing tide or…

The waters around Barnstable were teeming with life this past week.  Off Sandy Neck, a large humpback whale was spotted splashing and slapping its fins less than a half of a mile offshore.  Seeing a humpback whale this deep inside Cape Cod Bay is a rather rare event, as the whales usually stick around Stellwagen Bank and the waters off Provincetown. Why was the whale so close to the Barnstable coastline?  He may have wanted to say hello to some our local beach-bums.  However more than likely, the whale was drawn to the area for nutritional purposes.  Big humpbacks need a lot of mackerel, herring and sandeels to survive, so it is plausible to assume that there is a lot of bait holding just offshore Sandy Neck. The bluefish we caught this …

Night Surfcasting Cape Cod

Hitting the right spots after dark will allow the shorebound angler to catch big bass throughout the next couple of months.

With Fourth of July weekend knocking at our front door, it's about that time for serious striped bass fishermen to transition into fishing during the night.  The weather's getting hotter, the fish are starting to settle into their summertime haunts, and the bite is best, by far, after dark. Fishing Cape Cod from shore during July and August can be a tough.  The bulk of the striped bass population will be holding in deeper water only accessible by boats.  Things can get frustrating at times.  However hitting the right spots after dark will greatly increase your chances of tying into one of the Cape's summertime cow striped bass. Hitting the following hotspots, after dark, will give you a good chance at hooking up with a nice striped bass. …
