Former Red Raider Headed to the NFL

Barnstable High School Class of 2009's Isaiah Voegeli became the third football player in school history to get a shot at NFL stardom yesterday when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles.

It seems like he was always destined for something this big. Former Barnstable High School four-sport standout Isaiah Voegeli (Class of 2009), who starred the past four years at Merrimack College as an all-conference wide receiver, signed a contract yesterday as an undrafted free agent with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. Voegeli was a Red Raider varsity letterman in football, track, lacrosse and baseball, a rare, four-sport letterman. Voegeli's athleticism was so prominent in high school that he hit .478 in his first season as a shortstop for Barnstable Post 206 American Legion - three years removed from having played baseball. The 5-foot-11, 177-pound wideout was dominant as a senior, registering the most catches (10.9) and receiving …

Above the Dynamics of High School Athletics

Columnist Sean Walsh tells us about Andrew Ellis, a special Barnstable High School senior athlete.

The dynamics of high school and high school athletics never cease to amaze me. There are the hangers-on. The groupies. The wannabees. There are the BMOCs. There are the BWOCs, although, I must confess, I am not certain I have ever actually heard that term before. There are the manipulators. There are the pretenders. There are the fans, in both good and bad ways, and there are the complainers. There are the duplicitous has-beens and the feigning heroes of yore. There are the "Jocks," still, and there are the bullies and then there are those whose glory fades as quickly as the setting sun. Bruce Springsteen sang about them. Robert Frost, in part, wrote about them. Almost every person I know, has some sort of story that hinges upon the …

To the Red Raiders... A Heart Has Been Mended

In one of the best seasons ever recorded in Barnstable High School's 120-year-old football program, many milestones were reached, many records set and many hearts uplifted by a stellar team performance that mended a collective football "heart."

Let's be honest, here.  Prior to Chris Whidden taking over the reins of the Barnstable High School football program, something had faded away from a football program steeped in pride, deep history and the very fabric that had helped build the Red Raider athletics program. It seemed, to be frank, that Barnstable's heart had been broken a few years back. Many feelings and egos had been stepped on. Relationships were tested and some sheared in two. The indivisibility of the communal sense of togetherness and pride that had been well over 100 years in the making, seemed to have been, well, divided. And while Coach Whidden's presence and leadership had become a welcome breath of fresh air, while his invaluable, bright and loyal coaching staff …

For Red Raider 'Eleven', the Accolades Pouring In

While the 2012 Barnstable High School football season has been a remarkable 'Team' effort, many individual milestones were set, as well as a handful of team records and hallmarks reached.

One of the more appealing aspects of this autumn's Barnstable High School football team has been its humility. Now the time has come to list some of the records set and milestones reached, both individual marks and team records. This season was the most prolific in Barnstable High School's 120 seasons. Founded in 1893 by the Red Raiders' first-ever captain, Warren R. Bowen, no Barnstable High team since has scored as many points as the 2012 Red Raiders. It is likely that no other Red Raider team's offense, combined with special teams output, has been as productive either. While the results have not yet been completely tallied, the Red Raiders accumulated more than 5,000 all-purpose yards including passing/receiving yardage, rushing yardage…

Barnstable Red Raiders Ready for Everett

The Div. 1A MIAA Superbowl match-up Saturday at Gillette Stadium boasts the number 1- and number two-ranked teams in the state: Barnstable High (11-0) versus Everett High (11-1) in what promises to be the game of the year. Kickoff at Gillette is 1:30 pm.

No matter who wins, no matter what the weather, this one will be a bruiser. The undefeated Barnstable High Red Raiders - ranked no. 1 in Eastern Massachusetts - face the no. 2-ranked and 11-1 Everett High Crimson Tide at 1:30 pm, Saturday, Dec. 1, at Gillete Stadium. Barnstable defeated Everett for the first time in school history on September 28 when both teams stood at 3-0 and Everett maintained the number one ranking in the state. In a driving, windblown rain, the Red Raiders defeated the Crimson Tide to take over the top-ranked slot and have not looked back. Barnstable defeated Lincoln-Sudbury Tuesday night to finish at 11-0 and in so doing matched the school's greatest season: the vaunted, unbeaten 1995 campaign that saw the Red & …

Red Raiders Heading to Super Bowl, Finish 11-0

The Barnstable High School football team (11-0) avenged last year's nailbiting loss to Lincoln-Sudbury (10-2), defeating the Warriors on the same field (Taunton High) by a 28-7 margin, thanks in large part to Hayden Murphy's 191 yards and 3 TDs.

How sweet it is. Barnstable High channeled its emotions and energy just right tonight at Taunton High School, as the Red & White virtually shut down the Lincoln-Sudbury Warriors (10-2) and took home a 28-7 victory and in so doing earned a trip to the EMass. Division 1A Super Bowl this Saturday (Dec. 1) at Gillette Stadium at 1:30 pm. Barnstable, ranked #1 in the state, will face #2 Everett High in a rematch of the two teams' earlier season slugfest, a game which set the Red Raiders on course for its best season since 1995. Barnstable's 11-0 record matches the 11-0 season of 1995, and it all happened on the precise same field: BHS defeated New Bedford at Taunton High in the 1995 Div. 1A Super Bowl, 11-0, to also finish a perfect 11-0. …

LIVE BLOG: Barnstable vs. Lincoln-Sudbury MIAA Playoff

The unbeaten Barnstable High School Red Raiders (10-0) head to the MIAA football playoffs Tuesday to face the 10-1 Lincoln-Sudbury Warriors for the second straight year in what promises to be a great game. The winner will go the Division 1A Super Bowl.

The Old Colony League Champion Barnstable Red Raiders (10-0) will face the Dual County League (Large) champions Lincoln-Sudbury (10-1) to determine which team will go to the Div. 1A Super Bowl, according to the MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) web site. Kick-off time Tuesday is at 5:15 pm at Taunton High School. Patch will be there to live blog the game. BHS Athletic Hall of Fame Enshrines Its 8th Class

The banquet room at the prestigious Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville was jam-packed Saturday afternoon as the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted its 8th class of enshrinees.

There was barely a dry eye in the house. His words drove at the very core of every person in the room. Former coaches, administrators, athletes, alumni and family by the dozens filled the banquet room at the posh Oyster Harbors Club Saturday afternoon (Nov. 25), and the room was stone silent as former Red Raider standout athlete Kerry Delaney (Class of 1972) described his late, lifelong best-friend and teammate Michael J. Duffley Sr. (Class of 1972) who passed away unexpectedly at age 52 in 2007. "He taught his children and the youth he coached that what you put in, is what you get out," Delaney said. Duffley was honored as the 7th annual recipient of the prestigious William Leo Shields Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor given as part of…

Red Raiders Beat Trojans, Crowned OCL Champions

For the first time since 1962, Barnstable High last night captured back-to-back football league championship titles as it defeated the host B-R Trojans in a nailbiting, 27-25, rollercoaster of a game.

Here comes the postseason. With two regular-season games still on the November slate, the top-ranked unbeaten Barnstable High School football team (8-0) defeated the host Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans, 27-25, and in so doing captured its second straight Old Colony League championship and secured a spot in the MIAA playoffs after Thanksgiving. With Lincoln-Sudbury's victory last night over archrival Acton-Boxborough, a win that ensured the Dual County League Large championship for the Warriors, it looks like Barnstable will once again face Lincoln-Sudbury in the playoffs in four weeks. Last year, the Red Raiders lost to L-S in the playoffs. Barnstable has not won back-to-back league titles since 1961 and 1962 under then head coach John "Jack…

Red Raiders Romp Over Billerica in Tight Contest

The Barnstable High School football team (7-0) retained its unbeaten mark this afternoon at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field in Hyannis with a 46-33 barnburner against guest Billerica High (2-6).

This one rattled some nerves. Still ranked atop the Eastern Mass. polls heading into this afternoon's home game versus first-time-ever opponent Billerica High School, the Barnstable Red Raiders seemed a bit rusty at times after a bye week, but thanks to some incredible defensive play by senior captains and linebackers Andrew Ellis and Ryan Litchman in the second half, victory for the home team was assured. With the score tied at 26-26 with 5:08 left in the third quarter, Barnstable found itself with its back against the wall and was forced to punt. Litchman lofted a 50-yard boot to put Billerica at its own 25. As the Indians started to make progress downfield, senior Dakota Perilli registered his first-career sack to bring up a key 3rd and…
