Barnstable County Real Estate Values Climb in March

In March the median individual property sale value was up 8.9 percent from 2012.

The Barnstable County Register of Deeds provided the following. Barnstable County Register of Deeds, John F. Meade, reports that the volume of real estate sales in March 2013 was down 2.6% from March 2012 volume and the total value of sales was down 4.1% from the previous year.  The median individual property sale value was up 8.9% from the previous year.  There was a 8.6% decrease in the volume of mortgage activity from March 2012 levels. Year to Date: Volume of Sales is down 9%; Total Value of Sales is down 3.3%; Individual Sales Value is up 8.5%; Mortgage Volume is up 5.3%. Home Sales Rise in Barnstable County

Barnstable County saw a 12% increase in home sales in February compared to a year ago.

  Barnstable County home sales rose in February—unlike the commonwealth— which saw a drop in sales for the first time since December 2011, according to a recent report by The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman. Barnstable County saw 182 home sales in February, which was an increase from 163 home sales in February 2012, a nearly 12 percent increase. However, because of a week January, home sales are down nearly 4 percent overall in Barnstable County this year compared to a year ago, according to The Warren Group. Median sale price in Barnstable County saw a 24 percent increase in February 2013 compared to February 2012 while the overall 2013 median sale price was up by 8 percent. Ocean Storm Expected To Slam Cape, Islands

The rain and wind are already tuning up, with heavy winds and coastal flooding expected to storm the Cape, according to the National Weather Service.

Barnstable can expect more high winds and potentially destructive flooding today and tomorrow. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind advisory, a coastal flood warning and a hazardous weather outlook for Barnstable County. "Strong to damaging winds into early Friday morning across portions of the coast and escpecially the Cape and Islands," according to the NWS.  A coastal flood warning went into effect at 5 a.m. today and will remain in effect though 10 a.m. Friday. Coastal flooding and severe beach erosion is likely during the high tides until Friday morning, the NWS said in their warning statement: "The storm surge is projected to be 2.5 to 3 feet at most East Coast locations from Thursday morning though Friday morning. …

Winter Storm, High Wind Warnings Issued for Barnstable County

The National Weather Service issued Winter Storm and High Wind warnings for Barnstable County.

  The Winter Storm warning that went into effect Saturday afternoon will remain in effect until Sunday at 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Heavy snowfall is expected through the Sunday afternoon. High winds could complicate things. A High Wind warning goes into effect at 5 a.m. and remains in effect until 10 p.m. Winds could gust up to 55 mph. Some Cape Codders have already lost power.

NWS Issues Blizzard Watch for Barnstable, A Potential Historic Winter Storm

One to two feet is expected, beginning Friday morning.

  The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties effective from Friday morning through Saturday afternoon.  According to the National Weather Service, Blizzard and Coastal Flood Watches will also be in effect Friday evening into Saturday afternoon. Hurricane force winds are possible for the Cape and Islands during the storm. 35 to 45 mph north winds are expected with gusts up to 70 mph along the southcoast. Light snow is expected to begin by Friday morning and increase in intensity throughout the day with the heaviest snowfall occurring Friday night into Saturday morning. High Wind Warning for Barnstable County

The National Weather Service is predicting high winds for the region. A high wind warning for Barnstable County goes into effect tonight at 9 p.m.

  The high wind warning will remain in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. There is a chance of showers tonight with thunderstorms possible after 4 a.m. You should expect some areas of fog as well. Otherwise, it will be cloudy, with a low around 50. It will be windy with a southwest wind 20 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. The chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Barnstable County Unemployment Down Again

A positive sign for the Cape’s job market, the County’s unemployment rate fell again in September.

The State released the latest unemployment figures Tuesday. The unemployment rate for Barnstable County was 5.8%, a full percentage lower than September of 2011. "This continues the long term trend of our having a lower unemployment rate than the same month in the previous year, which has been the case for nearly two years,” said David Augustinho, Executive Director for the Cape and Islands Workforce Investment Board. Compared to the rest of the State Barnstable County also faired well.  The State’s unemployment rate was 6.4% in September, down from 7.2% the same month last year.

County Launches Program to Reduce Obesity, Increase Healthy Living

Barnstable County joins 48 municipalities in Massachusetts to participate in Mass in Motion Municipal Wellness and Leadership Program.

Local and state officials have granted an expansion of the Mass in Motion Municipal Wellness and Leadership Program to help reduce obesity and, encourage healthy eating and active living, according to a Health Commissioner press release. Massachusetts Department of Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach and Barnstable County Commissioners Vice-Chair Sheila Lyons gathered on Friday at the Barnstable County Complex to celebrate the expansion of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s (MDPH) Mass in Motion Municipal Wellness and Leadership Program. Cape Man Infected with Rabies, Possibly from Bat

Despite a Cape-wide program to help prevent rabies, a 60-year-old man has contracted the disease.

A Cape man is infected with rabies and in critical condition, state officials said today the Boston Globe reported. The Boston Herald reported the 60-year-old man will most likely die from the infection, which has a mortality rate close to 100 percent. According to the Herald article, the man is believed to be bitten by a bat in his home. However, officials have not drawn any conclusions about how the man was infected. Rabies on Cape Cod has been an issue resulting in a county-wide program that works with the Cape Cod Rabies Task Force.  The task force, which works with all 15 towns on Cape, has reported positive cases for the raccoon strain of rabies in all towns, according to the county website.
