Representatives of the Stop & Shop grocery store chain are looking to hire temporary replacement workers as it prepares for a potential labor strike, according to a report in the Boston Herald Friday. The Quincy-based company is currently holding contract discussions with United Food and Commercial Workers Union locals who represent more than 40,000 Stop & Shop employees in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, according to the Herald. The three-year contract will expire on Saturday, Feb. 23. While discussions continue, the company is running eight hiring sites from Mansfield to Quincy to Woburn. Shaw’s is losing money while customers leave the store for updated and expanded grocery store chains like Stop and Shop and Whole Foods.
One Shaw’s customer told the Boston Globe that the store’s prices are higher for basics like eggs, milk and bread. Customers going to other grocery stores for cheaper prices have become a problem for the company. Shaw’s sales fell from $5.3 billion to $3.8 billion in 2012. In Barnstable the company has faced tough competition from new stores in Hyannis and Sagamore. Market Basket, a company known for its cheap prices, opened a store in Sagamore in June 2012. The store is a huge draw for Cape residents who often drive far distances to cut down the grocery budget. The new Stop & Shop on Route 132 in Hyannis is set to open on July 27 at 7am, according to a The Barnstable Patriot report. "The new 65,000-square-foot stand-alone store, developed by Atlantis Development for Stop & Shop, was more than a decade in the making," The Barnstable Patriot reported.
