Shop Locally on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy. "If people were more aware that locally spent dollars has a more direct positive impact on a local community than dollars spent in nationally owned stores, they will then consider spending their dollars exclusively in locally owned stores," said …

Mahoney’s Launches Trees for Troops Program

Mahoney’s Garden Centers launched its “Trees for Troops” program this month. Last year the program provided thousands of Christmas trees for active military members and their families at military bases along the East Coast.

Community members can purchase a tree through December 2 at any Mahoney’s location and over the phone on the Troops hotline (781-721-4691) for only $24.50.   Mahoney’s added the hotline this year to allow more community members to take part. “We’re very excited about the new Trees for Troops Hotline,” said Spokesperson Paul Waxman.  “Last year we learned that many people would have loved to donate a tree, but where too busy to drive to one of our stores. So now they can just call and charge one on a credit card.”   FedEx will deliver the trees up and down the east coast to Coast Guard Stations, a Navy Station and a National Guard Station, including the Boston Coast Guard Station.   To participate you can visit any Mahoney’s location or …

Where To Buy Turkeys from Cape Cod Farms

Check out our list of Cape Cod farms and markets that offer fresh, organic turkeys.

If you're interested in buying home-grown, fresh turkey from a nearby farm, Cape Cod has three locations. Coonamessett Farm in East Falmouth sells organic, free-range turkeys. The service is so popular for the holiday the farm is already taking names for a wait list. Windfall Market in Falmouth is also selling free-range, organic turkeys. The Cape Cod Organic Farm in Barnstable also sells organic turkeys. The farm requires a $25 deposit and charges $5.50/lb. Where do you buy farm-fresh turkeys?

Where The Elite Go To Eat And Greet

The Dock Street Coffee Shop in Edgartown

You want to sit right behind Darren Patrick at the grill because what he’s doing with eggs and batter and toast and every kind of breakfast meat is surely as skilled as anything Nadia Comaneci ever performed on the tumbling mat. Your devoted correspondent is there on a November Sunday at 8 a.m. when one of the many morning rushes was taking place (the diner opens at 6:30). Darren has two salami-studded omelets spread out on the giant fry slab. They're the shape and size of deflated beach balls, and when he flips them once-twice-thrice into the classic burrito-bulked omelet, you realize that if only you could prepare something like that yourself at home, you’d be pestered with half-a-dozen proposals of marriage per week. To the left of …

Michael, good rhyming, babe! I'm reminded that I wrote a lot about stacks 'n stacks of meat, even as I happen to be a vegetarian. What I ordered was French toast -- certainly vegetarian but none too healthy. Still, life would not be worth living without the occasional plate of French toast. Or pancakes. Or waffles. Pass the maple syrup.   more ›
