Coast Guard Rescues Fishing Boat off Nantucket
The Coast Guard rescued 8 crewmembers aboard a commercial fishing boat that caught fire 35 miles off the coast of Nantucket.
Crewmembers on the 88-foot commercial fishing boat Raiders radioed for help Monday at 8:40 a.m., according to a press release. The Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod sent a Jayhawk helicopter and 42-foot fast response boat to assist. While waiting for help Raiders’ crewmembers attempted to put out the fire with extinguishers unsuccessfully. A Good Samaritan nearby supplied five additional fire extinguishers. The Coast Guard’s Jayhawk Helicopter monitored rescue efforts from overhead and remained on scene to assist if needed. With the additional fire extinguishers the Raiders crew was able to extinguish the fire, but could not start the engine.
