Coast Guard Rescues Fishing Boat off Nantucket

The Coast Guard rescued 8 crewmembers aboard a commercial fishing boat that caught fire 35 miles off the coast of Nantucket.

  Crewmembers on the 88-foot commercial fishing boat Raiders radioed for help Monday at 8:40 a.m., according to a press release. The Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod sent a Jayhawk helicopter and 42-foot fast response boat to assist. While waiting for help Raiders’ crewmembers attempted to put out the fire with extinguishers unsuccessfully.  A Good Samaritan nearby supplied five additional fire extinguishers. The Coast Guard’s Jayhawk Helicopter monitored rescue efforts from overhead and remained on scene to assist if needed. With the additional fire extinguishers the Raiders crew was able to extinguish the fire, but could not start the engine. The Coast Guard Cutter Seneca arrived at 11:40 a.m. to assist and established towing operations…

Police Rescue Armed and Despondent Man at West Dennis Beach

Yarmouth and Dennis police rescued a 55-year-old Yarmouth man who was armed and despondent following a three-hour standoff.

  The Yarmouth Police Department contacted the Dennis police Thursday at 12:42 p.m. regarding a 55-year-old Yarmouth man who had threatened to harm himself and was believed to be at a south side beach in Dennis, according to a press release. Dennis Police Officers checked all south side beaches and found the subject’s vehicle at West Dennis Beach. Police Officers from Dennis and Yarmouth as well as Officers from the Yarmouth Department of Natural Resources began looking for the subject in the beach and jetty area. Rescuers found the man at the end of West Dennis Beach on the rock jetty. The subject was holding a pair of shears in his hand and threatened to harm himself with the shears if police came near him.
