Catholic Memorial Sends Red Raiders Packing

Some things just weren't meant to be and last night proved that phrase to be true as the high-scoring Catholic Memorial Knights devoured the visiting Barnstable High School boys basketball team, 81-63, in the first round of the Division 1 South Sectionals

Never underestimate the adrenaline produced by an energetic home crowd. Add 20 turnovers to the mix and a debilitating first five minutes of the third quarter, and the Old Colony League champion Red Raiders soon found themselves on the back end of a rout as the host Catholic Memorial Knights ran away with last night's MIAA Division 1 South Sectional first-round affair, 81-63. Outrebounded by the likes of 6'8" junior center Gerard Adams and senior captain Dan Powers, the Red Raiders nevertheless did not lack for hustle; but intermittent spurts of the team chemistry seen earlier in the season, combined with a 43.64% shooting percentage from the field, proved ill-fated for the guests and uplifting to a host accustomed to performing in a …

March Madness: Red Raider Boys Face Catholic Memorial Tonight

The Barnstable High School boys varsity basketball program has faced many opponents since the program's inception in 1925, but it's never faced Division 1 perennial powerhouse Catholic Memorial and tonight they head to Boston to test their mettle.

Tonight, the men will be separated, as they say, from the boys. While both the Barnstable High School and Catholic Memorial boys basketball teams boast equal 16-4 records, the differences between the two teams may seem like night and day. Barnstable repeated as Old Colony League champions this season, a feat it has not accomplished since 1981 when then head coach Dick Segura led the Red & White to back-to-back Southeastern Massachusetts Conference (SMC) championships. But the Red Raiders have not won a postseason boys varsity basketball game since February 28, 1995 when Barnstable defeated Dennis-Yarmouth in a Division 1 South Sectional Preliminary Round game that boasted 36 combined points from brothers (and BHS Athletic Hall of Famers) …

Red Raiders Seeded 9th - Will Face Catholic Memorial

After repeating as Old Colony League Champions and finishing at 16-4, the Barnstable High School boys basketball team has its work cut out when it enters the Division 1 South Sectionals this week.

Let the March Madness begin. Not since 1981 have the Red Raiders repeated as league champions, but with today's Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association release of the sectional brackets, the road to the TD Boston Garden will be a long one. Coached by Red Raider Hall of Famer Gerry McDowell (108-73), this winter's 16-4 Red & White squad has been seeded ninth in the Division 1 South Sectional bracket. In all likelihood, Barnstable will not get a home-court advantage as it is slated to face perennial powerhouse Catholic Memorial (16-3) on Thursday, March 1 at 7:00 pm. The site has yet to be determined. The seedings are as follows: 1. Brockton; 2. Madison Park; 3. Weymouth; 4. North Quincy; 5. Newton North; 6. Franklin; 7. Taunton…

Red Raider Boys Are Undisputed OCL Champions

It took a superlative, all-around team effort, with an enormous amount of passion and devotion to head coach Gerry McDowell's design, and in the end the Barnstable High boys basketball team rose victoriously tonight over Dartmouth, 71-53, as OCL champs.

Basketball is, without question, a team game. And not since 1981, has the Barnstable High School boys varsity basketball team won back-to-back league titles, but tonight, the Red & White did just that, devouring an overwhelmed Dartmouth High Indians team, 71-53, thanks in large part to a massive double-double performance from senior captain Charlie Rice and an entire host of BHS hoopsters. Rice poured in a season-high 24 points, combined with 15 rebounds, while junior front man Nick Peabody buried 17 points combined with seven rebounds to help lead Barnstable past a young albeit talented Indians' squad. But it was not easy in the early going. The Red Raiders were up 20-15 after the first quarter, but found themselves ahead by a hair at …

Tigers Tame Red Raiders on the Road

Expectations ran high for the 27th-ranked Red Raider boys basketball team last night at Taunton HIgh School, but the host Tigers had the benefit of a supportive hometown crowd and took advantage of Barnstable's weaknesses in a 73-65 upset.

At any level of basketball, team chemistry is everything. But that chemistry seemed lacking last night for the Barnstable High School Red Raiders as the host Taunton Tigers (9-5) staged an upset over their guests, 73-65, at the Joseph Rabouin field house. Even though Barnstable's Charlie Rice made a return to the starting lineup, the stoic and dependable big man apparently still suffered from a week-old bruising talbone injury and was forced to come out of the game early in the 1st quarter. Taunton capitalized on his absence and what appeared to be the lack of any substantial presence Barnstable usually posts beneath the basket. Combine Rice's absence with just a 34.62% Barnstable field goal percentage for the game and the mountain the Red…

Raiders Clinch Tourney Berth With Win Over Indians

The Barnstable High School boys basketball team didn't make it look easy last night on the road, but when the dust finally settled, the Red Raiders walked off the court with a big Old Colony League victory firmly tucked in their collective belts.

The Red Raiders are going to the postseason. Playing in front of a lively, chirpy crowd at Dartmouth High School last night, the visiting Barnstable High School Red Raiders outlasted the hosts, 53-47, but not without great effort and they did it all without the services of senior captain Charlie Rice. Rice, who suffered a bruised tailbone the night before in practice, gave way to his understudy Dylan Morris who did not disappoint, even with 20 stitches in his elbow. The junior forward poured in a career-high 14 points and hauled in 7 rebounds to help pace the Red & White to a crucial Old Colony League victory. Barnstable now stands at 3-0 atop the OCL standings in its defense of last year's Old Colony League championship title. And now at …

Rice Leads Red Raiders Past D-Y Dolphins

Barnstable raised its record to 9-2 last night in Hyannis in a decisively defensive, 61-48 tilt that was paced by senior captain Charlie Rice's 24 points while Jake Kipnes scored 8 points and had 8 assists.

Early on, this one was close. Tied at 13-13 after the first quarter, Barnstable held a slim 24-22 lead at the half, but then broke things open in the third quarter and never looked back. The Red Raider boys basketball team defeated the visiting Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins for the second time this season, 61-48, but truth be told, the boys in Red & White likely have their sights set on Friday night's big OCL game at Dartmouth. The Red Raiders are 2-0 in the Old Colony League standings and are 9-2 on the season. Last night, the weight of success laid heavily upon senior captain Charlie Rice's shoulders as the big man went 11-15 from the floor and 2-3 from the line for a season- and career-high 24 points. Fellow big man Nick Peabody collected 10…

Friday Night Lights: BHS Stages Second OCL Win

Four Barnstable High boys basketball players finished with double-digit scoring and Charlie Rice and Nick Peabody notched double-doubles as the Red Raiders overcame the visiting B-R Trojans, 63-53, last night in Hyannis.

If "one" is the loneliest number, then "10" must be the most comforting. At least for the Barnstable High School Red Raider boys basketball team. In its second Old Colony League victory of the season, Barnstable outlasted the visiting Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans last night in Hyannis, 63-53, thanks to double-digit scoring from senior captain Charlie Rice, junior forward Nick Peabody, and senior guards Everett Walsh and Travis Kendrew. Rice poured in 16 second-half points and had 19 on the night while pulling down 10 rebounds to give him his third double-double of the season, while fellow big man beneath the glass Nick Peabody collected 13 points and also had 10 rebounds on the night. Walsh scored six of his 10 points in the second half …

Red Raiders Win One, Lose One in Durfee Classic

The unbeaten Red Raider boys basketball team met its match last night in Rhode Island's LaSalle Academy, falling 65-53. The 4-1 Barnstable High squad took the loss on the heels of a big, 67-47 win over the host Durfee Hilltoppers the evening before.

The holiday lay-off didn't seem to bother the Red Raiders one night, then the next night the tables were turned. On the heels of a 67-47 drubbing of the host B.M.C. Durfee High Hilltoppers on Thursday night, the Barnstable boys basketball team took a tough, 65-53 loss last night at the hands of LaSalle Academy, a private school in Rhode Island. The Red Raiders fell to 4-1 on the still young season with the loss in what was the championship game of the 2nd Annual Thomas "Skip" Karam Holiday Classic Tournament. But Barnstable came out with all cylinders clicking last night and held a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, only to watch that lead evaporate with just two minutes remaining in the first half as LaSalle rattled off 11 unanswered …
