Cape Cod Baby Could be First New Year Baby in the State

A baby born at Cape Cod Hospital early New Year’s Day could be the first born in the state in 2013.

The first Cape Cod New Year’s baby was born to Marie Meritus at 5 seconds after midnight at Cape Cod Hospital, according to hospital spokesperson Robin Lord. Baby Meritus took the top spot from a baby born at Newton Wellesley Hospital at 12:08 a.m., according to the Cape Cod Times. At Falmouth Hospital the first birth of the New Year was a baby girl born to Ashley Andrade of Falmouth and Carlos Jurado of the Bronx, NY at 12:28 a.m. New Year’s Day.

VIDEO: Polar Plunge at Millway Beach in Barnstable

Some Barnstable residents kicked off the New Year with an icy dip at Millway Beach during the annual New Year's Day Polar Plunge.

More than a hundred residents took part in this year's polar plunge at Millway Beach in Barnstable at 3 p.m. New Year's Day.  This year's event raised money for the family of Chhewang Lama, who recently passed away.

Happy New Year! See what's open today on New Year's Day.

Here's a run down of what's open/closed: All municipal, state and federal offices and facilities will be closed. This includes schools and the post office.  There is no fixed route bus service today for the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority. Liquor stores: Open at the owner's discretion. Retail and convenience stores: Open at the owner's discretion.  Restaurants and bars: Most will be open, but call ahead. It's up to the owner.  Happy New Year!
