Fines don't do anything and they just find a way to pass those costs on to the consumer in the form of rate hikes anyway. The cost of burying lines will be passed to us. The cost of tree trimming will be passed to us. Meanwhile, NSTAR is still raking in profits, right? (Good luck trying to read their annual report.) We have some of the highest electricity costs in the country with some of the …   more ›

Keating: NStar Needs to do a Better Job [VIDEO]

Congressman Bill Keating says NStar needs to do a better job when it comes to providing customers with restoration times.

Congressman Keating toured the shelter at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School Monday with Governor Deval Patrick and other Cape lawmakers. During a press briefing after the tour, Keating said it’s vital for customers to know when their power will be restored. “The frustration, which I share about NStar, is the level of public information that they are sharing with the public. People worried if their pipes are freezing would like to know if the service is estimated two or three days. That would help make a decision for them about sealing off the water,” Keating said. Keating said he spoke with children of elderly parents who were having difficulty convincing them to move to a shelter. Keating said if those individuals knew they would not…

In the 1950's we had the greatest state infrastructure that anyone in the world has ever seen and we have neglected it and have allowed it to badly deteriorate. Massachusetts spending on electric infrastructure is way down. The vast majority of our politicians are completely incompetent. This electric outage demonstrates just how incompetent our government really is ! Massachusetts has had poor …   more ›

Checking to see if friends on the Cape have power, and read this chain. Weather has changed. It is more dangerous so when it occurs, such as this storm, what was built over, 30 years?, cannot be repaired in days. We have power outages in western MD and myself, I prepare and live with it. But the world has to have complainers, here many are on welfare, and I'm SO glad I'm not one of them!!! LSM   more ›

NStar: Cape Power Could Take Days to Restore

NStar warns customers that it could take several days to restore power on Cape Cod, saying the blizzard caused 'Devestating Damage to Electric System'.

Though hazardous weather and driving conditions have continued to hamper power restoration efforts, NSTAR is working to assess damage to its electric system as it prepares to dispatch repair crews as soon as it is safe to do so. Due to the significant amount of work ahead, the company is warning customers of a multi-day restoration effort with lengthy power outages. “This blizzard has caused devastating damage to our electric system in the southern part of our service area and we are working to push forward with our restoration effort as soon as it’s possible to do so,” said Craig Hallstrom, President of NSTAR Electric. “Before the storm hit we enlisted the aid of hundreds of outside resources and hundreds more are joining us from areas …

State Fines Utilities Millions for 2011 Storm Responses

NStar was fined $4 million in responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm, but already announced it plans to appeal.

The state on Tuesday ordered a total of $24.8 million in penalties to utility companies for their response to storms in 2011. Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan joined Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Chairman Ann Berwick and DPU commissioners today to announce the findings of the DPU’s investigation into responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm. Provided the penalties hold up, customers should see a reduction in their bill, though it is unclear how much, officials said.  National Grid faces the steepest penalty, at $18.725 million; NSTAR has been ordered to pay $4.075 million; and Western Massachusetts Electric Company to pay $2 million. Recognizing that outages are …

State Approves Cape Wind, NSTAR Power Purchase Agreement

The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities approved a 15-year power purchase agreement between NSTAR and Cape Wind, moving the project forward.

NSTAR will purchase 27.5 percent of Cape Wind’s power under the 15-year agreement approved by the state. The state’s approval removes a huge roadblock for Cape Wind to secure financing for the project.   The Massachusetts Supreme Court upheld a similar deal between National Grid and Cape Wind in December 2011. National Grid agreed to purchase 50 percent of Cape Wind’s power.   “Taken together, these two PPAs provide Cape Wind with the critical mass to continue securing project financing,” said Theodore Roosevelt IV, Cape Wind’s Financial Advisor and Managing Director of Barclays in a press release.   The approval is a huge milestone for the 130-wind turbine project in Nantucket Sound. “This decision helps secure the position of …

Grid President Says 'Sandy' Restoration Efforts Are Ahead of Original Schedule

National Grid President Marcy Reed said Wednesday that the comapny is ahead of schedule in its effort to restore power and said the company will continue to wok out kinks with the newly-created community liaison position.

National Grid is head of schedule in its effort to restore power following widespread outages following Hurricane Sandy, according to company President Marcy Reed.  Reed, speaking to reporters in a conference call from a Chelmsford parking lot on Wednesday afternoon, said the company’s estimated restoration times were based on having three-quarters of its customers restored by Thursday night. “We are already there,” she said. “We are progressing ahead of schedule.” As of 2 p.m. on Wednesday, 78 percent of the 237,000 National Grid customers that were without power statewide had been restored. In Hamilton, as of 3 p.m., 20 percent of the town – or 620 customers - remained without power. In Wenham, 12 percent of the town, or 185 customers …

National Grid Prepares for Action as Forecasts Call for Strong Wind Across New England

National Grid prepares for strong winds tonight.

Editor's note: The following is from a press release: As customers across New England hunker down for what is forecasted to be an extremely windy late afternoon into evening, National Grid crews and support personnel are prepping in the event strong winds cause damage to the region’s electrical network. High wind watches and warnings have been issued for later today and overnight across the region, with predictions of strong and possibly damaging winds in many areas combined with potentially heavy rain.   As a result, National Grid crews and support staff have been put on alert and are prepared to respond in the event of service interruptions. “Our first priority is always the safety of the public, our customers, and our employees,” said …

NSTAR To Add More Power

A third electric transmission line from off-Cape will add reliability, double power capacity.

The main electric transmission lines to the Cape have a belt and suspenders to keep the flow reliable. This week, NSTAR will begin adding another belt. New federal standards for service reliability require a backup to the backup. If one catastrophic event could take out the primary and secondary transmission lines, a third, separate line needs to be added. That situation is rare in most places. Not on Cape Cod. The primary electric transmission line is on a tower that crosses the canal southwest of the Sagamore Bridge. The secondary line is on the same tower. NSTAR has proposed, and all the regulatory agencies have approved, running a third line from a major substation in Carver, through Plymouth to the canal. NSTAR will replce the …

Seeing Helicopters on Wednesday and Thursday?

If you see some hovering helicopters on Wednesday or Thursday, do not be alarmed as NStar is conducting infrared inspections.

To help ensure the reliability of the region’s transmission system, NSTAR will begin its annual summer helicopter inspections of the electrical equipment on local rights-of-way on Monday, July 23. Weather-permitting, the inspections should be completed by the end of the week, NSTAR announced in a press release. “Residents and businesses depend on reliable electric service to power their day-to-day lives,” said Werner Schweiger, NSTAR President.  “Our annual helicopter inspections of the transmission lines in Eastern Massachusetts are a critical part of NSTAR’s commitment to providing that reliable service.” Infrared scanning equipment will be used during the inspection of all electric transmission facilities for which NSTAR is responsible …
