Centerville Teen Struck by 81-Year-Old Driver

A car in Centerville struck a 16-year-old Barnstable High School student Thursday morning while she was getting on the bus on Old Stage Rd. and Patriots Way.

  Timothy Maher was driving to work Thursday morning around 7 a.m. when he witnessed what he described as a horrific scene. Maher was stopped for a school bus when he saw a car heading towards several students crossing the street to get on the bus.  According to Maher the car appeared to not have noticed the bus or the students crossing the street. “All of a sudden I saw headlights and a car that was not even slowing down. He didn’t slow down, he didn’t break, swerve, anything,” Maher said in a telephone interview. Maher said the impact threw the girl the length of the school bus. Barnstable Police Sgt. Sean Sweeney said the 16-year-old victim was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence Rhode Island, a trauma hospital. Sweeney …

As far as older drivers there has to be a cutoff point in age that requires some kind of testing for renewal. For example for Airline Pilots it is age 65. Airline Captains that fly the line for a commercial carrier are required to have a recheck in a simulator every six months.
