Bent Hits 1,000, But Red Raiders Fall to Wellesley

The Barnstable High School girls basketball team played its heart out but in the end proved to have fewer weapons last night than the visiting Wellesley High Raiders, and fell in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals.

Only a sophomore, Molly Bent may very well one day prove to be one of Barnstable's all-time best. But last night at Barnstable High School, individual milestones were overshadowed somewhat as Bent's Red Raiders fell to the visiting Wellesley High Raiders, 66-49, in round one of the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals. Barnstable finished at 14-6 for the season. Bent scored 24 points on the night and netted her 1,000th career point from the foul line midway through the 4th quarter and she stood humbly and stoically as the crowd gave her a standing ovation. She is the only Red Raider in the 90-year history of Barnstable High School basketball to score 1,000 career points so early in her high school career. But the gifted shooting guard did …

BHS Snatches OT Hoop Victory from D-Y Dolphins

In a packed house last night in Hyannis, the Barnstable High School basketball team outlasted the visiting upstart Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins in thrilling, overtime fashion, 69-65, thanks in large part to the hot hands of Manny Perry and Sean Skagstead.

Dennis-Yarmouth looked like it was in the driver's seat all night long. That is, of course, until senior point guard Manny Perry drilled a jumper as regulation time expired to knot the score at 56-56. Perry finished the night with a well-earned 16 points, including an invaluable 5-6 performance from the charity stripe in overtime - an effort that very well may have proved the difference. Junior tall man Sean Skagstead - a new student this year at Barnstable High - matched Perry's offensive output with his own 16-point effort - an effort that seemed flawless beneath the basket throughout the evening. But with just 2:00 to go in the game and D-Y seeming to erase every ounce of momentum Barnstable tried to build with some inspiring play from …

Donalson Paces Red Raiders in Win Over Mansfield

Muhammad Ali once phrased that champions must "have the skill and the will" to win, but then countered "but the will must be stronger than the skill." No statement could ring truer for the Barnstable Red Raider girls who last night "out-willed" Mansfield.

Senior co-captains Rogetta Donalson and Olivia Costello have been getting the job done since they were about 10 years old. And last night was no different, as Donalson and the hobbled Costello poured in 29 of their Barnstable High School girls basketball team's 56 total points en route to a 56-49 MIAA Division 1 South Sectional first round victory over Mansfield. Costello, whose two free throws with 0:41 seconds remaining in the game sealed the win for the Red & White, has been limited physically for the past month due to a reported ankle injury and unable to practice. Donalson, who poured in 19 points on the evening, dropped in 11 of those 19 points in the fourth quarter alone, and in so doing revealed that willpower, as much as any …

March Madness: Red Raider Boys Face Catholic Memorial Tonight

The Barnstable High School boys varsity basketball program has faced many opponents since the program's inception in 1925, but it's never faced Division 1 perennial powerhouse Catholic Memorial and tonight they head to Boston to test their mettle.

Tonight, the men will be separated, as they say, from the boys. While both the Barnstable High School and Catholic Memorial boys basketball teams boast equal 16-4 records, the differences between the two teams may seem like night and day. Barnstable repeated as Old Colony League champions this season, a feat it has not accomplished since 1981 when then head coach Dick Segura led the Red & White to back-to-back Southeastern Massachusetts Conference (SMC) championships. But the Red Raiders have not won a postseason boys varsity basketball game since February 28, 1995 when Barnstable defeated Dennis-Yarmouth in a Division 1 South Sectional Preliminary Round game that boasted 36 combined points from brothers (and BHS Athletic Hall of Famers) …

Red Raider Boys Are Undisputed OCL Champions

It took a superlative, all-around team effort, with an enormous amount of passion and devotion to head coach Gerry McDowell's design, and in the end the Barnstable High boys basketball team rose victoriously tonight over Dartmouth, 71-53, as OCL champs.

Basketball is, without question, a team game. And not since 1981, has the Barnstable High School boys varsity basketball team won back-to-back league titles, but tonight, the Red & White did just that, devouring an overwhelmed Dartmouth High Indians team, 71-53, thanks in large part to a massive double-double performance from senior captain Charlie Rice and an entire host of BHS hoopsters. Rice poured in a season-high 24 points, combined with 15 rebounds, while junior front man Nick Peabody buried 17 points combined with seven rebounds to help lead Barnstable past a young albeit talented Indians' squad. But it was not easy in the early going. The Red Raiders were up 20-15 after the first quarter, but found themselves ahead by a hair at …

Clippers Sink Red Raiders on the Road

In front of a modest home crowd, the Barnstable High School Red Raiders boys basketball team fell behind early as the visiting Falmouth Clippers stayed loose and in control of their fate and left Hyannis with a 54-53 win.

Nothing tastes quite so sweet as revenge. The visiting Falmouth High School Clippers avenged their season's sole loss last night, defeating their arch-rival Barnstable Red Raiders, 54-53, in front of a modest crowd in Hyannis, and thanks in large part to the hot hand of junior forward Nathan Steele. Steele poured in a game-high 18 points on the night, as the Clippers saw eight players put up offensive numbers. Freshman guard Brian Jeffrey tacked on 10 points and junior guard Andrew McGill followed with (7) points. While some of Barnstable's defensive focus may have been on the usually high-scoring senior, Damien Reid, and successfully so, it mattered little as Steele remained consistently effective throughout the affair. Down 42-36 after …

It's A Weekend of Red Raider Champions

The Barnstable High School girls rolled over Bridgewater-Raynham Friday night to capture the team's first OCL championship since 2008, while BHS junior wrestling co-captain Will Henson brought home the program's first-ever individual state championship.

There is glory in the air. Barnstable High School junior wrestling co-captain Will Henson went unbeaten at 2-0 in the MIAA Division 1 State Individual Tournament yesterday, defeating Weymouth's Sean Murphy, 15-0, to bring home the school's first-ever individual state championship. Henson's victory over Murphy capped a 4-0 weekend for the 170-lb., newly crowned state champion, and qualified him to make a deeper run at the MIAA All-State Tournament in Salem, MA on Feb. 24. Last year, Henson finished in 4th place in the "states," in the 160-lb. class, but last weekend he joined a rarified crowd as just the sixth Red Raider to win a Division 1 South Sectional championship. He was also awarded the South's Most Outstanding Wrestler medal. …

Red Raiders Escape With Win Over Durfee

In spite of shooting 32.65% from the floor, the host Barnstable Red Raiders went to 12-3 on the season last night with a 67-63 win over B.M.C. Durfee High School in Hyannis.

They say a good basketball team needs an even better bench when hitting the final stretch of the regular season. With a postseason already firmly clinched, and coming off a tough OCL road loss last week to Taunton, the Barnstable Red Raiders regrouped last night in Hyannis and rode the hot hand of Justin Alvaran's 15 points off the bench to a 67-63 victory over the Durfee Hilltoppers last night in Hyannis. Alvaran scored 9 of his 15 points in the second half and his effort was bolstered by a remarkable 12-point performance from Dylan Morris who went 6-9 from the floor in his hottest game of the season. Jason Eddy was no slouch, either, dumping in 10 of his 16-point total in the second half and adding six rebounds. Nick Peabody had a …
