Pope John Paul II Gains Redemption Over Red Raiders

Barnstable High School (9-6) simply could not solve Pope John Paul II's "Big" Ben Gibson who stifled the Red Raider bats and added a two-run homer of his own this afternoon in Hyannis in a 3-0 win.

What a difference a couple of weeks can make. Following a 5-4 loss to the Barnstable High Red Raiders (9-6) two weeks ago at McKeon Park, Pope John Paul II (16-1) avenged itself with a decisive 3-0 win on the road. Barnstable will face the upstart Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on Monday at home in hopes of turning things around. But getting things going at the plate proved a near impossibility for the host Red & White nine this afternoon (Saturday, May 18) as PJP II's Ben Gibson tossed a complete-game one-hitter and then belted a two-run homer to deep left-centerfield in the top of the 7th inning to place a dagger in the Red Raiders' heart. Barnstable's Riley Ashe took the loss and left the game in the fifth down 1-0. He allowed four hits and …

Red Raiders Roll Over New Bedford Whalers

The defending Old Colony League Champions, the Barnstable High baseball team rode the efficient opening day pitching of senior James Burke and some collective hot bats en route to a 10-0 win over the visiting Whalers of New Bedford.

Leave it to the lefties. Senior James Burke staged an efficient starting performance on the hill for the Barnstable High nine yesterday afternoon in Hyannis, and got all the offense the Red & White would need when senior co-captain Dylan Morris (3-4, 3 RBI) drove in fellow co-captain Danny Walsh in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0. The score would remain as such until two innings later. Barnstable broke it open versus the visiting New Bedford Whalers (0-2) in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring nine runs on six hits two walks and a pair of Whaler errors and it all started when Morris led off with a single then stole second base and scored when Jack Harrington reached on an error. Freshman Griffin Burke (1-4, 2 RBI) got his first …

Dellacona Breezes By Framingham in South Quarterfinals

Blessed with a pitcher's frame and poise and the even greater natural gift of a rifle arm, Barnstable's Keegan Dellacona turned in a brilliant complete-game performance versus Framingham High as BHS advanced to the MIAA South Semifinals.

One run was all he needed to cruise through a Framingham High (11-8) team that just upset Boston College High, 3-2. Barnstable's Keegan Dellacona (4-0), a senior righty still looking for a junior college to commit to in the fall, turned in his fourth victory of the season this afternoon versus Framingham High School, a complete-game, nine-inning, four-hit shutout. The Red & White is now 2-0 in the postseason following their 5-0 blanking of the visitors today. Dellacona, frankly, showed precisely why he was named the Old Colony League Pitcher of the Year last week. He struck out 14 batters, walked just one and tossed 130 pitches as the Red Raiders advanced to the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional Championship on Friday (June 8) versus the …

Red Raiders Open State Tournament with Victory

Barnstable High School's Willie Nastasi went the distance in a 9-inning, complete-game victory in the Red Raiders' MIAA Division 1 South Sectional opener versus Catholic Memorial this afternoon, setting the stage for a Tuesday, June 5 game.

Say hey, Willie, say hey. Barnstable High's senior righty Willie Nastasi went the distance yesterday afternoon in front of the most fans Hyannis has seen this season, and notched a 6-1 victory over visiting Catholic Memorial. Memorial finishes the season at 12-9, and Barnstable (15-4) advances to Tuesday, June 5 in the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals to face Boston College High School (15-5) or Framingham (11-7). The game will be played at Barnstable High School on Tuesday, June 5 at 4 pm. All tournament games are nine innings. Nastasi went all nine innings for the Red and White, throwing 110 pitches in a performance that stifled the Catholic Memorial bats. He struck out seven, scattered five hits, walked one and hit one batsman. His sole…

Red Raiders Clinch Old Colony League Title

Backed by 16 hits from his teammates, Pete Liimatainen notched his fourth victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a yeoman's effort on the mound and in so doing led the Barnstable High School baseball team to its first league title since 2007.

Keegan Dellacona's behind-the-back snare of a rocket line drive brought nothing but a giant, beaming, boyish grin to his freckled face. The catch was an instantaneous exclamation point to the end of one of Barnstable's most dominant victories of the season and one that captured for fourth-year head coach Joe DeMartino his first-ever Old Colony League Championship title. The Red Raiders have not won an OCL title since 2007, but Saturday afternoon they did so with a 14-2, 16-hit thrashing of OCL-rival Taunton. Had Taunton won the game, it would have taken the title for the second-straight year and done so by defeating a talented Red Raider team. Not this time. Senior righty Pete Liimatainen showed great poise through his 5 2/3 innings of …

Bent Bears Down, Leads Red Raiders to Win

Senior righty George Bent turned in a spectacular, complete-game performance this afternoon against Dartmouth and led Barnstable High School's diamond nine to a 6-1 victory. The Red Raiders are now 9-2 heading into tomorrow's road trip to Nauset.

Talk about control. Barnstable High School senior righty George Bent looked like the embodiment of a textbook lesson on pitching control this afternoon, as he struck out 12, walked none, scattered six hits and used 112 pitches in nine innings for his first win of 2012. The sole run he allowed - unearned - came in the top of the eighth inning. Through seven innings, Bent had allowed no runs, struck out 10, allowed just three hits and walked no one and he used just 80 pitches. And as if those details were not enough to add him to the growing list of top notch Red & White hurlers, of the 80 pitches Bent threw in his first seven innings of work, he pinpointed 66 strikes and tossed just 14 balls. After a pair of 1-2-3 innings by Bent in the …

Liimatainen Notches Another Win for Red Raiders

The 8-2 Barnstable High School baseball nine picked up a key win this afternoon at Hyannis, thanks chiefly in part to another stellar pitching performance from senior righty Pete Liimatainen (3-0).

Thank goodness for the Red Raider pitching staff. Backed largely by a complete-game, low-pitch-count effort from senior righty Pete Liimatainen, the Barnstable High School baseball team (8-2) eked out a victory over the visiting Sandwich High Blue Knights and used just two hits to do it. Only Dylan Morris and D.J. Crook notched base hits for the Red and White, while Mark Brodd had an RBI-sacrifice fly and Eric Rogorzenski, pinch-running for pinch-hitter Tim Biliouris, scored the game-winner on a passed ball that scooted past the Sandwich catcher and around the backstop far enough for Rogorzenski to score from second base for a 2-1 walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh. Biliouris, pinch-hitting for designated hitter Sam Holway, walked …

Falmouth Nine Clip Red Raiders in Nailbiter

The Falmouth Clippers handed the red-hot Barnstable High School baseball team its first loss of the 2012 campaign, a 4-3 nailbiter that had all the makings of a quality ballgame, replete with late-inning dramatics, lively dugouts and some gutsy pitching.

Pitch for pitch, Falmouth's Kyle Kasperczyk and Barnstable High's Pete Liimatainen matched each other. After six innings, each respective pitcher had thrown almost an equal number of pitches and the score remained deadlocked at 3-3 yesterday. But after a fruitless Red Raider seventh frame, the host Falmouth Clippers loaded the bases with one out on closer Dan Holzman and then Kasperczyk came through with a screaming line drive over a drawn in infield, garnering a walk-off RBI single. The finale? Falmouth 4, Barnstable 3. Holzman took the hard-luck loss for Barnstable (5-1) while Kasperczyk picked up the "W." The lanky Falmouth right-hander basically won the game for himself with his game-winning baseknock. Barnstable's Dylan Morris helped …

Red Raiders Roll Over Nauset in 12-1 Rout

Senior righty Keegan Dellacona fanned 15 Nauset Warriors this afternoon in Hyannis to pick up his second win in as many starts as Barnstable rolled to a 12-1 victory.

Make no mistake, this senior right-hander can pitch. Barnstable High School's Keegan Dellacona struck out 15 batters on this chilly, breezy afternoon on the Red Raider home field, defeating Nauset in a complete-game, four-hitter in a 12-1 finale. Dellacona allowed one unearned run in the top of the seventh inning, gave up four singles and walked four. He now stands at 2-0 with a 0.00 earned run average intact. Nauset's Joey Ogden was the sole Nauset batsman to have multiple hits as he banged out a pair of basehits to go 2-4 on the day. Barnstable's offense was an altogether different story, however, as every man in the Red Raiders' lineup rapped out at least one hit in this affair. Barnstable's Luke Besse went 2-3 with two runs scored, …

Red Raiders Down D-Y, Go 4-0

Riding the continued solid pitching of senior righty Willie Nastasi, as well as the apt closing duty of Dan Holzman, the Barnstable High School baseball team upped its record to 4-0 yesterday afternoon versus the talented Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins.

Not even a towering home run could solve the Red Raider pitching riddle. Barnstable High School senior righty Willie Nastasi (2-0) tossed six innings and allowed just two earned runs for his second win of the still young season this afternoon at Merril "Red" Wilson Field, leading the Red & White to a 5-3, nailbiting win. Barnstable now stands at 4-0 while D-Y falls to 1-1 after defeating Bridgewater-Raynham in its season-opener last week. BHS welcomes Nauset Regional tomorrow at Hyannis. Right-handed junior closer Dan Holzman notched his second save in as many appearances, striking out two batters in the bottom of the 7th inning, and escaped a bases-loaded jam as three D-Y Dolphins reached on infield errors. Nastasi struck out seven, …
