Things were close in the early going in the 127th meeting between Falmouth and Barnstable, with the Red Raiders ahead by a slim margin at halftime 13-7, but then Barnstable took off running in the second half for a 39-14 finale.
In the first half, this one had all the makings of a classic. Ahead just 7-0 in the first quarter, Barnstable found itself tied with guest Falmouth 7-7 after the Clippers' junior quarterback Jack O'Rourke found Darion Bartibogue in the end zone to make it 7-6. Falmouth kicker Billy Ellis's PAT kick made it an even 7-7 and fans on both sides had hope for a real barnburner, a hope that did not diminish by halftime with Barnstable leading by a slim 13-7 margin. But when Barnstable senior captain and quarterback Nick Peabody (10-18, 155 yds.) found Dylan Morris for a six-yard touchdown to start the second half, hope began to fade quickly for the rough and tumble Clipper Eleven. Morris's 13th touchdown reception of the season was shortly …

In the annual celebration of the 120-year-old Barnstable High School football program, as well as its salute to the school's 15-time volleyball state champions, hundreds of fans flocked to Main Street, Hyannis and the village green Wednesday afternoon.
Welcome to a "Sea of Red." Such was the premonitory speech delivered by 2nd year Barnstable High School head coach Chris Whidden Wednesday afternoon, as the BHS Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade culminated on the Hyannis Village Green, much to the delight of hundreds of fans, parents, players and alumni. The annual parade - begun in the 1940s as a salute to BHS football players who returned home as veterans from World War II - vanished from the local scene for three years before returning in 2007, with thanks to the school's football booster club, The Quarterback Club, founded in 1967. Centerville's Judy Lambert, whose son Mark Lambert is a senior wide receiver for the Red & White, chaired the club's parade committee and by all accounts it …

For the first time since 1962, Barnstable High last night captured back-to-back football league championship titles as it defeated the host B-R Trojans in a nailbiting, 27-25, rollercoaster of a game.
Here comes the postseason. With two regular-season games still on the November slate, the top-ranked unbeaten Barnstable High School football team (8-0) defeated the host Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans, 27-25, and in so doing captured its second straight Old Colony League championship and secured a spot in the MIAA playoffs after Thanksgiving. With Lincoln-Sudbury's victory last night over archrival Acton-Boxborough, a win that ensured the Dual County League Large championship for the Warriors, it looks like Barnstable will once again face Lincoln-Sudbury in the playoffs in four weeks. Last year, the Red Raiders lost to L-S in the playoffs. Barnstable has not won back-to-back league titles since 1961 and 1962 under then head coach John "Jack…

Down 27-10 with 3:06 remaining in the game, the never-say-die Barnstable High School Red Raiders came back to tie the game at 27-27 and sent things into overtime in one of the most exciting comeback attempts in recent memory.
It simply does not get much better than this. Pounded on play after play throughout last night's road game at Mansfield High School's Alumni Field, it appeared with just 3:06 left in the fourth quarter that Barnstable (4-4) had finally met its true, physical match. The Hornets' sidelines appeared like a sea of kelly green and so too did its running game, led by senior captain Greg Donahue who carried the ball 30 times for 237 yards of Mansfield's 321 yards rushing and 405 yards of offense. Donahue also scored two touchdowns, including the game-tying score in overtime, leading the hosts to a nail biting, 34-33 win. Ranked as high as sixth in the state in some polls, Mansfield (7-1) came out of the gates roaring like a thundering herd and …

Barnstable had the lead at halftime last night at Dr. Paul F. Walsh Field in downtown New Bedford and built on that lead heading into the third quarter, but the host Whalers (3-2) turned things up and rattled off 24 unanswered points for the win.
History, as it's been said, has a way of repeating itself. The Barnstable High School Red Raiders football team has never truly fared well at Dr. Paul F. Walsh Field in downtown New Bedford, as it went into last night's non-league tilt against the host Whalers carrying a lifetime 3-13 road record. That record now stands at 3-14 (BHS, road) since the two teams first met 83 autumns ago in 1928 and 20-9-2 overall for the Whalers. Down 17-7 in the third quarter, New Bedford pigpiled on 24 points the rest of the way with a confident 31-17 win over its guests. The Whalers now stand at 3-2 on the season while Barnstable falls to 2-3 with a remaining schedule that promises to be no less difficult. Senior quarterback D.J. Crook dislocated his thumb…

There is little doubt that the Barnstable Red Raiders gave it the old "college try" last night at W. Leo shields Memorial Field in Hyannis, but in the end the visiting Everett High School Crimson Tide had too much depth, and too much size and speed.
Some football pundits called for a Barnstable High School victory. Many high school football aficionados called for a complete slaughter. The simple truth at the culmination of this 34-21 affair was that the host Barnstable High School Red Raiders' football team never gave up, while the visiting and victorious Everett High School Crimson Tide never gave in. When the dust finally settled, so to speak, the visitors boarded their coach buses with yet another feather in their cap, while the hosts jogged to the locker room with a sense of "close, but no cigar." At the end, Everett High School stood tall at 4-0, while Barnstable fell to 2-2 on the season. Everett never truly relinquished command of this non-league affair as senior quarterback …
