Barnstable High School (9-6) simply could not solve Pope John Paul II's "Big" Ben Gibson who stifled the Red Raider bats and added a two-run homer of his own this afternoon in Hyannis in a 3-0 win.
What a difference a couple of weeks can make. Following a 5-4 loss to the Barnstable High Red Raiders (9-6) two weeks ago at McKeon Park, Pope John Paul II (16-1) avenged itself with a decisive 3-0 win on the road. Barnstable will face the upstart Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on Monday at home in hopes of turning things around. But getting things going at the plate proved a near impossibility for the host Red & White nine this afternoon (Saturday, May 18) as PJP II's Ben Gibson tossed a complete-game one-hitter and then belted a two-run homer to deep left-centerfield in the top of the 7th inning to place a dagger in the Red Raiders' heart. Barnstable's Riley Ashe took the loss and left the game in the fifth down 1-0. He allowed four hits and …

The defending Old Colony League Champions, the Barnstable High baseball team rode the efficient opening day pitching of senior James Burke and some collective hot bats en route to a 10-0 win over the visiting Whalers of New Bedford.
Leave it to the lefties. Senior James Burke staged an efficient starting performance on the hill for the Barnstable High nine yesterday afternoon in Hyannis, and got all the offense the Red & White would need when senior co-captain Dylan Morris (3-4, 3 RBI) drove in fellow co-captain Danny Walsh in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0. The score would remain as such until two innings later. Barnstable broke it open versus the visiting New Bedford Whalers (0-2) in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring nine runs on six hits two walks and a pair of Whaler errors and it all started when Morris led off with a single then stole second base and scored when Jack Harrington reached on an error. Freshman Griffin Burke (1-4, 2 RBI) got his first …

Now standing at 11-0-1 on the 2012 season, and having reached the regular-season midway point, the Barnstable Post 206 American Legion baseball team gears up to make a bid for the Northeast Regional Tournament with games on tap each day this week.
Inning by inning. Championships are rarely won by looking too far ahead and in District 10 American Legion baseball - the most competitive high school-aged summer baseball in the state - it takes moment-by-moment focus to attain glory. Thus, the motto of this year's Barnstable Post 206 American Legion baseball club, "inning by inning." Thanks to five solid innings turned in last night by righty Pete Liimatainen (3-0), Post 206 took home its 11th win of the season (11-0-1) against host Hanover Post 149, a 9-1 one-sided affair. Liimatainen struck out one, scattered three hits and walked two while relievers George Bent and Alec Morrison took care of the sixth and seventh frames with precision. In all three of his starts this season, …

The 2012 high school baseball season came to an end for the Barnstable Red Raiders Sunday afternoon on a gorgeous day at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton as the Taunton Tigers downed the Red & White, 3-0.
With Willie Nastasi on the mound, the Red Raiders perhaps thought little of their opponent the Taunton Tigers in Sunday afternoon's MIAA Division 1 South Sectional Semifinal. Perhaps too little. The feisty, spirited and lively Taunton squad (18-5) took advantage of a 1-0 lead and rode it all the way to victory yesterday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, tacking two more runs on in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 3-0 finale. Taunton faces Xaverian today at 4:00 pm at Braintree High School in the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional Championship. Nastasi certainly pitched well enough to win his final high school baseball game, but the oft-silent Red Raider bats and perhaps a handful of squandered opportunities to produce runs …

Blessed with a pitcher's frame and poise and the even greater natural gift of a rifle arm, Barnstable's Keegan Dellacona turned in a brilliant complete-game performance versus Framingham High as BHS advanced to the MIAA South Semifinals.
One run was all he needed to cruise through a Framingham High (11-8) team that just upset Boston College High, 3-2. Barnstable's Keegan Dellacona (4-0), a senior righty still looking for a junior college to commit to in the fall, turned in his fourth victory of the season this afternoon versus Framingham High School, a complete-game, nine-inning, four-hit shutout. The Red & White is now 2-0 in the postseason following their 5-0 blanking of the visitors today. Dellacona, frankly, showed precisely why he was named the Old Colony League Pitcher of the Year last week. He struck out 14 batters, walked just one and tossed 130 pitches as the Red Raiders advanced to the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional Championship on Friday (June 8) versus the …

Barnstable High School's Willie Nastasi went the distance in a 9-inning, complete-game victory in the Red Raiders' MIAA Division 1 South Sectional opener versus Catholic Memorial this afternoon, setting the stage for a Tuesday, June 5 game.
Say hey, Willie, say hey. Barnstable High's senior righty Willie Nastasi went the distance yesterday afternoon in front of the most fans Hyannis has seen this season, and notched a 6-1 victory over visiting Catholic Memorial. Memorial finishes the season at 12-9, and Barnstable (15-4) advances to Tuesday, June 5 in the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals to face Boston College High School (15-5) or Framingham (11-7). The game will be played at Barnstable High School on Tuesday, June 5 at 4 pm. All tournament games are nine innings. Nastasi went all nine innings for the Red and White, throwing 110 pitches in a performance that stifled the Catholic Memorial bats. He struck out seven, scattered five hits, walked one and hit one batsman. His sole…

Following a rainout earlier in the week, the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins returned to Barnstable this afternoon, seeking revenge from an earlier season loss at the hands of the Red Raiders. Facing Willie Nastasi a second time, this time the Dolphins succeeded
In every sense of the definition of the word, high school baseball players are only human. Thus, in this afternoon's 8-7 road victory for the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins it was the green & white, not the red & white, who rose victoriously with clutch hitting and in the end, better defensive play. A pair of what looked like sure-fire basehits by Barnstable in the bottom of the seventh inning, with the tying run aboard, turned instead into web gems for the visitors as D-Y senior second sacker Cody Sullivan robbed sophomore Derek Estes of a basehit up the middle and senior catcher Denny Beynor's line drive was snared with precision. D-Y's Spencer McCaffrey got the victory in relief of Matt Peterson, while George Bent, in his second-ever varsity …

Heading into the final week of its regular season, the 11-3 Barnstable High School baseball team rode quality starting and relief pitching en route to a 7-0 win over the visiting Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans yesterday afternoon at Barnstable High School.
It's pretty tough for an opponent to beat you when your pitchers allow just a handful of baserunners and those same pitchers strike out 14 batters. Senior starter Willie Nastasi turned in seven strong, shutout innings yesterday versus the visiting Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans, striking out 11 batters, scattering three basehits and walking just two batters. Senior righty Keegan Dellacona came on in the 8th and 9th frames and allowed one hit and fanned three batters. The 7-0 victory was Nastasi's 4th win of the 2012 campaign. He is now 4-0 as the Red Raiders ready to welcome D-Y on Monday. Nastasi and Dellacona got all the run support they would need in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a Luke Besse sacrifice fly. Sophomore Derek …

Senior righty Keegan Dellacona fanned 15 Nauset Warriors this afternoon in Hyannis to pick up his second win in as many starts as Barnstable rolled to a 12-1 victory.
Make no mistake, this senior right-hander can pitch. Barnstable High School's Keegan Dellacona struck out 15 batters on this chilly, breezy afternoon on the Red Raider home field, defeating Nauset in a complete-game, four-hitter in a 12-1 finale. Dellacona allowed one unearned run in the top of the seventh inning, gave up four singles and walked four. He now stands at 2-0 with a 0.00 earned run average intact. Nauset's Joey Ogden was the sole Nauset batsman to have multiple hits as he banged out a pair of basehits to go 2-4 on the day. Barnstable's offense was an altogether different story, however, as every man in the Red Raiders' lineup rapped out at least one hit in this affair. Barnstable's Luke Besse went 2-3 with two runs scored, …

In defense of the BHS head baseball coach, it's easy to second guess a guy when you're watching from the stands and there's no way of truly knowing all the details of what goes on with a team when we're looking from the outside in - truth is, it was the best record Barnstable's had in quite some time and the first league title in the same amount of time. The head coach gave it the best he could. …   more ›
