A screening will be held April 10 for parents of 3-year-olds interested in sending their children to the preschool program at Centerville Elementary.
The preschool program at Centerville Elementary is the only public preschool in Barnstable. The program offers a high quality-learning environment for children with and without disabilities. There are still openings available for next fall for 3-year-old peer models. Principal Matt Scheufele said children who have good language and social interaction skills are ideal candidates for the program. “There are many children that are in the program with special needs in language development, so we are looking for children who are able to use good language skills and are able to model appropriate behavior,” Scheufele said. Scheufele said the program benefits both children with special needs and typical children. “I think typical children learn …

More than 100 students and their families gathered at Centerville Elementary Friday night to celebrate the win with a night of Lego building.
The Bay Lane PTA was one of 100 recipients selected out of more than 2,000 applicants nationwide. “I am amazed that Barnstable received this grant money, when you look at the number of applicants, it’s amazing,” Superintendent Mary Czajkowski said. The $5,000 grant will enable Centerville Elementary to build on its already successful Lego robot after school program. “There is a curriculum that they are going to use that will be focused on building and design in a community. So the kids might be building a police station and have an officer come in and speak to the children about their building and their part in the community. It’s a great opportunity to build in some excitement around Legos with some real world social studies curriculum,” …

Jacqueline Flynn's research into how to kill ticks is being looked at by the federal government.
Jacqueline Flynn was working on an entirely different angle of tick research when she came across findings that would launch her project into first place at the Braintree High School Science Fair, second at regionals and garner the interest of state and federal officials. Flynn, a sophomore at Braintree High School, was worried about making sure she removed ticks from herself and her clothing after collecting them for a different project when she researched how to kill them in a laundry cycle. She found a lack of data, and what she did find indicated that ticks frequently survive a clothes washer cycle because they are difficult to drown, but that a full hour in the dryer can kill them. After 13 cycles of testing, Flynn discovered that …
