7 Ways to Keep Kids Active in Barnstable This Summer

  1. Street Hockey The Hyannis Youth & Community Center is offering an outdoor street hockey program from 6 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday evening until Aug. 28. The program costs $25 a person; the fee includes a t-shirt. Registration is available Monday through Fridays at the HYCC until 4 p.m.

  2. Sandy Neck Junior Ranger Program Kids can explore the Sandy Neck barrier beach ecosystem as a Junior Ranger, earning badges by participating in outdoor hikes, identifying local plants and animals including endangered species and learning how to rescue marine mammals. Junior Rangers must attend four out of five sessions to be eligible for the program. The program runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon every Tuesday from July 9 to Aug. 6, and the group meets at the gatehouse. The cost is $60. 

  3. Swim & Safety Week From July 8 to 12, the town of Barnstable's aquatic staff will host a variety of demonstrations on lifeguarding, rules and safety tips. Check schedules posted at each beach for more information.

  4. Junior Lifeguard Training If your children cannot pass the swim test after this class, your money will be refunded in full! The classes go from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays, until Aug. 13 at Craigville Beach. Children ages 13 and 14 can participate.

  5. Beach Soccer Kids can join this league for free! The league practices from 5:30 p.m. to dusk every Monday night until Aug. 5 at Kalmus Beach. For more information, contact melanie.vankleeck@town.barnstable.ma.us.
