Mass. Maritime Splits MASCAC Twinbill with Fitchburg State

Don't count the Bucs out yet.

Thanks to junior righty Zac Cooney's stellar pitching performance in the second game of a MASCAC doubleheader at Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon (April 12, 2014), the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers blanked their hosts, 11-0.

Cooney went the distance and allowed just a four hits in seven innings for the shutout. He struck out three and walked just one. He is now 5-1 on the season. The Buccaneers are now 10-11 on the season with a conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Bridgewater State.

Mass. Maritime plated two runs in the third inning and then opened up for six more in the top of the sixth inning. A Bobby Rosano three-run homer - his first of the season - in the top of the seventh inning sealed the victory. Romano finished the game with a 3-5 performance with four RBI. Freshman Aidan Desrosiers went 3-4 with two RBI.

Earlier in the day, Mass. Maritime senior righty Keith Sanchez (1-3) took the hard-luck loss when Fitchburg State plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap open a 1-1 tie. Maritime's sole run came in the top of the 5th inning when Everett Walsh led off with a single and then scored on an Aidan Desrosier RBI-single.

Seniors Bobby Lee and Matt Pelletier also came up big at the plate for the Bucs throughout the day and Rosano and freshman Terrence Mudie also played solid defensively.
