Fowler Spins Web Over PJP II

One word that comes to mind is "masterful."

Barnstable High senior southpaw Chris Fowler (2-1) had a two-hit shutout through six innings of work and allowed just one earned run in the 7th (two total) to pace the Red Raiders to a 5-2 win over guest Pope John Paul II (16-1). The loss was Pope John Paul II's first of the season. Barnstable is now 9-6.

Fowler had a no-hitter going after two innings of work, allowed a base hit in the third, walked one batter in the fifth and allowed a single in the sixth before tiring slightly in the 7th and last frame to allow two runs. One of those runs was unearned due to a pair of outfield errors. All totaled, Fowler scattered three hits, walked one and was the beneficiary of some fantastic defense, chiefly from shortstop Derek Estes. Barnstable turned three double plays on the day.

Fowler's offense plated two runs for him to work with in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of base hits by Estes and Jack Harrington and a two-run double by Griffin Burke, giving him a team-leading 12 RBI on the season. Burke went 2-3 on the day and scored a pair of runs.

The game-winner proved to be when senior right fielder Micah Gregory scored in the second inning to make it 3-0. With one out, Gregory struck out swinging but Pope John's catcher Ben Crago threw the dropped third strike wildly to first and Gregory arrived safely. He then stole second base and came home on a Hayden Murphy rbi-double. Murphy went 2-4 on the day.

Other key hits came from Jack Harrington (2-2, RBI, two runs) and TJ Wardwell (1-2, 2-RBI double).
