Barnstable All Set for Turkey Day

If you're suffering from Red Raider football withdrawals after last week's loss to top-ranked Mansfield (10-0), then next week promises to help uplift your spirits.

For the 127th time since 1895 and the 87th time on Thanksgiving Day, Barnstable will face Falmouth High School in the fifth oldest football rivalry in Massachusetts on Thursday, Nov. 28. The game is set to take place at Elmer "Guv" Fuller Field (behind the Falmouth Police Station) at 10:00 a.m.

In this affair, team win-loss records are almost meaningless. Falmouth is 1-8-1 and finished 0-6 in Atlantic Coast League play, while Barnstable is 8-2 and finished as Old Colony League Champions for the third consecutive season.

But it has almost never been safe to predict this one.

Even though Barnstable downed the Clippers 39-14 last Thanksgiving Day, Barnstable led just 13-7 at halftime in what appeared to be a fantastic, hard-fought match-up. The Red Raiders would win last year's game, 39-14, en route to a playoff win versus Lincoln-Sudbury, but then the Red & White fell 21-20 to Everett in the Div. 1A Super Bowl.

Barnstable running back Hayden Murphy comes into this Turkey Day game with 1,074 yards rushing on the season and 19 touchdowns, while Red Raider quarterback Kristian Lucashensky has thrown for over 1,000 yards.

Barnstable (8-2), saw its postseason dreams dashed last week in the MIAA Div. 2 South Sectional Championship, falling to Mansfield on the road, 41-16.

Barnstable leads the Thanksgiving Day rivalry 43-39-4, but in the overall rivalry, the series is tied, 59-59-8. Barnstable and Falmouth used to play on Columbus Day as well as Thanksgiving Day.
