Gov. Patrick to Headline Kevin Houston Memorial Dedication

Gov. Deval Patrick is expected to be at Barnstable High School Saturday afternoon (Nov. 12) when school officials, local dignitaries, students and friends of the late US Navy Seal CPO Kevin Houston gather to dedicate a memorial in Houston's honor.

The late U.S. Navy Seal CPO Kevin Houston will never be forgotten.

Houston, a 1994 Barnstable High School graduate and former Red Raider football captain and basketball star, was killed in action in Afghanistan on August 6, 2011 along with 30 other Americans.

Family, friends, school officials, local dignitaries, students, veterans and organizers of the First Annual Kevin Houston 5K Run will be in attendance Saturday at Barnstable High School at 1 p.m. to dedicate a memorial to Houston in the school's Cobb Astro Park. The event will kick off in the performing arts center and culminate in the Astro Park.

Gov. Deval Patrick is also expected to be in attendance and Houston 5K Run organizers, including one of Houston's former football co-captains, Stephen Rose, will be on hand to announce what BHS Principal Patrick Clark called a sizeable donation.

"I'm very proud of the Barnstable community for coming together like this," Clark said, and added that he's been involved in numerous running events but never one that raised as many donations for a new event or had such a unifying purpose and end result. "It was awesome for a first-year road race," he said.

Immediately following news of Houston's death, the late Navy Seal's former BHS class- and teammates reunited and were led by the formation of two committees that began preparing to memorialize Houston's life and accomplishments. According to Clark, more than 500 runners participated in last Saturday's Houston 5K Run.
