Town Tightens Up Rental-Property Regulations

After almost a year of deliberation, the Town Council has finalized stricter regulations for rental property inspections and waste removal practices, according to a Barnstable Patriot report.

The new ordinance states that landlords who own three or more units--as well as landlords who own one or two units with six-month leases or shorter--are responsible for final collection and disposal of garbage.

Additionally, rental properties must be inspected by the town with the owner present, and landlords will face a $300 fine if they violate rental regulations twice in a 12-month period.

Rental property regulations--and the arguable lack thereof--have been a hot topic in Barnstable for some time. In late June, for example, firefighters discovered more than two dozen people living in a home on Pitcher's Way.
