Gov. Deval Patrick is mulling a request from President Barack Obama for the commonwealth to shelter some of the unaccompanied children that have flooded over the country’s southern border.
If Patrick agrees to the request, the children would be housed in secure facilities.
Patrick called the issue at the border a “humanitarian crisis.” Massachusetts should do what it can to help, he said, but added that the commonwealth needs to understand the “scope” of the assistance and what the commonwealth can actually provide.
More than 52,000 children have been caught crossing into the country since October and Obama has called it an “urgent humanitarian situation.”
What do you think? Should Massachusetts agree to take in some of the unoccupied children that have come across the US border? Let us know in the comments section
