MBTA fares are set to increase about 5 percent starting July 1.

Officials reviewed a proposal Tuesday that would increase the fares for subway/bus lines by 10 cents, while monthly passes would rise $5, according to Boston.com.

The fare hike plan, which has not yet been approved, was announced the same week as the launch of late-night service Friday.

The higher fares are expected to generate $20 million in revenue, according to Boston.com, and the MBTA is expected to have a $10 million budget surplus next year.

The last fare hike was in 2012, when fares jumped 23 percent to help the transportation system close a huge budget gap.

I would not have a problem with it if they could provide basic services like security. Over the years there has been more crime against people that ride the T and people that work for the T.

Be responsible for your own security. In this state that prides itself on compassion and releasing people serving life sentences.....it is the only option.

Judge Amy Gray? Are you a judge employed by the usurped Commonwealth of Massachusetts? If so I can see why you drink the Kool-Aid of Massa Deval and The Illegally empowered to raise rates and fees D.O.T. I just love how people in government will sell out the human race for their government job and pension! When I get elected I will privatize almost all sectors of government and fire every hack that is stealing from the people!
