The US Army Corps of Engineers and Coast Guard assisted in the recovery of the body. The body was transported to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, where ER personnel worked on him and pronounced him dead at 10:18 am, according to police.
The initial investigation and examination revealed no obvious signs of fatal trauma beyond that sustained from entering the water, police said.
A witness came to the State Police Barracks in Bourne to report that a man was scaling the fence on the Bourne Bridge. As a dispatcher began sending patrols to the bridge, callers to the barracks reported that a man had just jumped from the bridge. A subsequent investigation by State Police located his vehicle near the bottom of the bridge, police said.
Preliminary investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police along with the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section suggest his death was a suicide, police said.
