Two Arrested on Drug Charges at Barnstable Municipal Airport over the Weekend

Barnstable police arrested a Falmouth man Friday and a Cotuit teen Saturday on drug charges at the Barnstable municipal airport in separate incidents.

The Barnstable Street Crime Unit arrested two men Friday after Nantucket police alerted them to suspicious activity at the Nantucket airport, according to a press release from the Barnstable Police Department.

Authorities met up with Matthew Chicoine, 21, of Falmouth and Russell Viera, 22, of Hyannis when their flight from Nantucket arrived in Hyannis at 7:36 p.m. According to police, Chicoine was in possession of $1,800 in cash, two small bags of marijuana and 12 suboxone at the time of his arrest. Viera was arrested on three outstanding probation violation default warrants.

Chicoine was charged with possession of class B/suboxone with intent to distribute and possession of class D/marijuana with intent to distribute.

The teen had flown from Nantucket to Hyannis Saturday evening with no luggage, then walked out of the airport on foot towards Rte. 132. The juvenile quickly returned to the airport just missing his scheduled 6:30 p.m. return trip. The teen then purchased a 7:30 p.m. return ticket from another airline and again left the airport.

Upon again returning to the airport, the juvenile was questioned by police about his quick turn around and advised that a K9 unit was en route to the airport.  According to police, the teen admitted to having almost 3 grams or about $800 worth of heroine hidden in his pants prior to the arrival of the canine officer.

Police arrested the 16-year-old and charged him with possession of class A/heroin with intent to distribute. He was released to his father and will be arraigned in Barnstable Juvenile Court Monday.
