Hyannis Man Charged in Stealing $70,000

A Hyannis man was arrested Monday for allegedly stealing more than $70,000 in antique jewelry from a woman aboard a Hy-Line ferry, according to Barnstable police.

William R. Powers, 57, of 63 LaFrance Ave., was charged with larceny of property over $250, forgery and uttering a forged instrument, the press release stated.

The theft victim was traveling back from Nantucket on July 8 when she discovered that her suitcase went missing, including more than $70,000 of "irreplaceable" antique jewelry.

Barnstable Police Detective John York reviewed the ferry's surveillance video and saw a man taking luggage to his truck, but were not able to identify him.

On Friday, the woman noticed one of her stolen checks had been cashed at the Cape Cod Cooperative Bank in Hyannis. With help from the bank's footage, the Barnstable police were able to identify the thief.

Powers will be arraigned on Monday in Barnstable.
