How Prevalent is Crime in Barnstable?

You might see crime reported on a lot in the papers and on TV, but how prevalent is crime, really, in Barnstable?

All property and violent crimes from 2001 and 2011 are archived and searchable in a database hosted by the Cape Cod Times, which use information provided by the FBI's uniform crime reports.

"This searchable database from those public records shows the number of reported violent crimes - subdivided into four categories - and reported property crimes - also subdivided into four categories - and the rate of crime per 1,000 residents 2001-2011 in each Cape town," the Times explained.

From 2001 to 2011, there were an average of 328 violent crimes and 1,446 property crimes each year in Barnstable. Both of those averages higher than those reported in Falmouth

Every year the crime rate is only 1 crime per every 1,000 residents -- except for 2001 (the rate was 2) and 2011 (the rate was 3).

Throughout the years archived, numbers did not dramatically fluctuate.
