Cape Cod Hospital's Chief of Cardiac Surgery Allegedly Runs Over Officer's Foot

Cape Cod Hospital's chief of cardiac surgery will appear in court after being arrested on July 13 for allegedly running over an officer's foot while avoiding police at Logan International Airport, the Cape Cod Times reported.

Dr. Robert Rizzo, 56, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer and other motor vehicle violations, according to police. Rizzo has been head of the cardiac surgery program since its inception in 2002.

According to a state police press release, the altercation occurred when Rizzo, 56, of Needham, became angry and sworn at a police officer when the officer asked him to move his car in a terminal at the airport.

The argument escalated; Rizzo allegedly got out of his car and yelled at the officer while his wife packed her bags in the trunk.

Rizzo allegedly continued to draw attention with his anger and screaming in the terminal. When the officer approached his window, Rizzo cut his wheel, ran over the officer's foot, and fled the scene. The officer, who has not been named, was taken to the hospital.

He is scheduled to appear in court again Aug. 14.
