Who Won the Brown-Warren Debate?

Incumbent Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren squared off in their first debate Thursday night.

Republican Senator Scott Brown faced off against Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren Thursday night in a debate televised by WBZ-TV. The Thursday debate was the first of four planned tilts between the candidates, and it saw disagreement between the two on just about every topic.

Polls have seesawed over the last week, with Brown and Warren swapping small leads, as they have throughout the campaign. The debates may provide one or the other an opportunity to change voter minds and swing the election his or her way.

"He has said he will defend the top 2 percent and the top 3 percent...and will hold the other 98% of families hostage," Warren said, referencing Brown's position against extending the Bush-era tax cuts unless it also contained cuts for the country's top earners.

Brown countered by noting that Warren's policies would raise taxes, on everyone, in fact, it's the "first thing she looks to do," he said.

"And the criticism is that I don't want to raise taxes," he said. "Guilty as charged. I'm not going to raise taxes. I'm going to protect taxpayers' pocketbooks and wallets."

Who do you think won the debate? Did the back and forth change your mind about the upcoming election? Did the candidates answer the questions you had? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Seems someone has uncovered more lies from Liz. http://legalinsurrection.com/2012/09/elizabeth-warrens-law-license-problem/
Stumpgrinder September 24, 2012 at 10:50 PM
...............OK I stole this from someone else, but it was too good not to share! "There is a very simple explanation for all of this….her Cambridge office is on what is clearly Cherokee tribal land and does not fall under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts law!"
Stumpgrinder September 25, 2012 at 01:58 PM
..............by the way, Joy D.and all you other Warren believers, if you don't take the time to read Ouie's link, you are just sheep taking time out from grazing to vote. This is a telling expose that she is running from, a la Rosie Ruiz of Boston Marathon fame. Rosie broke the rules when she took the T, and the absent minded perfesser thinks that she doesn't have to live by the same rules as the rest of us: like have a license to practice Law in Massachusetts. Sounds like a pretty entitled, elitist, 1%er, seeking to represent us. She and her husband made some $4 million ++ in the last 5 years, yet she rails on those who share their lofty income. So for me, Fauxcahantas is a fraud, a puppet for those who brought us Barney Frank, and not who I want in office. If all one does is vote the party line, then all one gets is the same government that we all seem to dislike.
Kevin September 25, 2012 at 06:27 PM
He's voted bipartisan more than J.Kerry and T.Kennedy did in their careers combined. She'll vote Democrat 100% of the time. We already have one of those.
Kevin September 25, 2012 at 06:30 PM
Misogynist? Your use of this term says more about your lack of objectivity than it says about Sen. Brown.
charles September 26, 2012 at 01:39 PM
Brown was defensive and out of sorts it seemed. He looked and sounded mean when he started with the personal attacks on Warren. She remained cool, calm and collected under this assault and focused on Browns bad voting record and issues that are important to most people. That's the kind of senator i want
Joy D. Griffith September 26, 2012 at 02:42 PM
Thank you, Charles. An excellent analysis. Brown does continuously ramble in attack mode. He has no other choice, because of who he works for, and it is not for the poor OR the middle class. We had him on our campus two weeks ago. All he did was ramble defensively partial efforts and twisted meanings. Then he continuously attacked Elizabeth Warren with his "composed" information which was totally incorrect.

The zingers from Senator Brown impressed me !! The answer that Ms. Warren gave about working with a Republican, Senator Luger, spoke volumes about her knowledge and willingness to work with the opposite side. Senator Brown won the debate and earned my vote. I don't feel he was mean spirited. All is fair in an open debate forum.
Joy D. Griffith October 02, 2012 at 06:32 PM
"Senator Brown won the debate and earned my vote. " My goodness...you are quite INCORRECT with that statement. I believe it is only on your wish list. S. Brown's main effort in these debates are A. to attack E. Warren, B. to babble non-stop only piece/parts to confuse the audience in to thinking he speaks correctly. E. Warren's answers are clear, accurate, and she speaks the truth. BTW, her accuracy gave her the winning points ahead of S. Brown this 2nd time, as well as her 1st time.
Deanie October 03, 2012 at 06:08 PM
GO SCOTT! Warren is a tutored wanna be and a phony like Obummer! Lies very well & ducks the questions! I am part cherokee & proud of it, she was Indian when she wanted to be, even forgot at times! That girl that wanted a job after college wants a career...but Warren has a shovel ready job for her! Sure..all UNion & the dues goes to the DEMS! What a fraud! She also LOVES the occupiers...they should go to her house & protest!! She can tell them SHE BUILT THAT! GO SCOTT!
Joy D. Griffith October 03, 2012 at 08:30 PM
Aw-w-w-w, Deanie! I am sorry that you are so emotionally upset that you cannot realize E. Warren's truth, and S. Brown's game of lies. Calm down, Deanie...you only hurt yourself when joining in with S. Brown's game of lies setup.

I must of watched a different debate. The thing I came away with was Brown telling us how independent he was but when you go an see how he voted, he clearly pandered to his party almost 70% of the time. You want someone who works for the state, not for a party. It's funny how he kept trying to say he was an independent thinker. If thats the case, why not have an (I) next to his name and not an (R)... It's amazing the lemmings in this state that vote for someone who simply tells them what they want to hear...

Also, to the folks frothing at the mouth about Warren's legal status in Massachsuetts as a licensed lawyer? It's a NON-ISSUE. The quote from the BBO. ``Michael Fredrickson, general counsel for the BBO, says he does not believe a law professor would be considered to have “a continuous presence” or “an office practicing law.” “If they actually practice here – as some part-time law professors at some of the smaller schools do – they might,” Fredrickson says. “But being a professor at one of the large schools, their office is a professor’s office, and the fact that they tend to dabble in the practice of law doesn’t run afoul of our rule. I don’t think Elizabeth Warren would fall within that, such that she would have to register here.”`` http://masslawyersweekly.com/the-docket-blog/2012/09/24/warren-law-license-matter-called-non-issue/ Nice try though... classic dirty pool from a candidate that has done nothing for 2 years and is trying to remind us pretty quickly why we need to vote him out.
Deanie October 04, 2012 at 03:44 AM
Joy..Dam right I'm emotional...so tell me the TRUTH about Warren! I see a woman who used being a "woman of color" to benefit her career, yet denies it! You want to explain why she thinks America & MA should be "MORE like communist China!" She knows nothing more than what she has been told to say by her Liberal tutors & has NO experience what so ever in creating jobs! Roads & bridges do not stimulate the economy! Sorry Joy, but Scott has proven to be a Patriot where Warren has NOT! Don't cry too hard when she loses!! OH..by the way, Obummer looked foolish tonite..can't defend his distruction of our country!
steve auerbach October 04, 2012 at 02:29 PM
Deanie, If you think that Elizabeth Warren truly wants American to become like "communist China", then you truly need to have your head examined.
gjmacd October 04, 2012 at 02:40 PM
I'm not trying to change opinions or sway a vote. But I'll state facts. Deenie... 1. Warren never benefited from listing her heritage as "Native American", if believe otherwise, please POST proof of that. Show me where she benefited from her "women of color" status. Links, videos, etc. Please post them. 2. Warren's mother was part Cherokee and Delaware. Fact. If you believe otherwise, please post proof, links or videos refuting that which are REAL. Just as a side note... My mother is 100% Italian and my father is 100% Scotish. Guess what I tell people I mostly am? Italian (and I have a big Scottish name), you know why? Because personally I grew up in an Italian house where my mother and her family were a large influence. People read my name and think "He's Scottish", so you are WHO YOU THINK YOU ARE... The whole debate about her background is a scare tactic and its racist. Think about Brown's comments... "She doesn't look Native American." I wonder hall all the African American people who are lighter skinned, or have mixed race parents feel when someone says, 'You don't look black.'. It's amazing that people are buying into this.
Deanie October 04, 2012 at 03:17 PM
Sir, If YOU have proof that Warren's mother was part Cherokee...I'd like to see it. I have a few pictures of my Great Grandmother as a full Cherokee, does she! And why will sheNOT release her application to schools!! Regardless, she is a Liberal with an agenda that I do NOT beleive in! She is hand picked by Obama to un-seat Scott Brown and I have NO doubt she will vote acording to what she is told! I'm sorry, but the woman comes accross as a liar & a phony to me...my vote goes to Scott!
Deanie October 04, 2012 at 03:23 PM
OH REALLY...than ask her why SHE SAID IT! She was referring to their inferstructure & seems only to care about roads & bridges! Sorry Steve, she comes accross as very unqualified to care about MA middle class. And by the way, China has NO middle class! My vote goes to a real Patriot...Scott Brown!
Mike Holmquist October 04, 2012 at 03:23 PM
I don't believe either of the two statements you've made can be proven, therefore not facts. Just because there isn't evidence to disprove something, doesn't prove it happened.
gjmacd October 04, 2012 at 05:19 PM
Question: What if she is part Native American? What is she actually is? How does that change your opinion? I bet it doesn't. So what does this really matter? It doesn't. You're trying to find anything to knock a perfectly capable and viable candidate down. If this woman never claimed her heritage and it was in question, I'm willing to bet you would find 11 other things to try and make excuses as to why you think she's not the right person for the job... If we focus on Scott Brown's record. What do we actually see? Care to tell me what Brown has down for Massachusetts in his 2 years? Or would you rather talk about Native American lineage and the disparaging of a persons race, or what they might THINK they are... Something tells me you'd rather focus on rhetoric because if you didn't, you'd see exactly the facts -- and facts are scary to Scott Brown.
Patrick October 04, 2012 at 06:14 PM
I would appreciate it very much if you would apologize for what you have done to the English language. English has not done anything to deserve the horrible way you are treating it and you should stop. Thank you.

In any individual, politician or not, it is credibility and believeabilty that is paramount. Until I hear otherwise, I am holding my nose and voting for Scott Brown because Liz Warren does not have my vote of confidence as a credible or believable woman when it comes to her heritage and her corporate ties. Come clean Liz and maybe I will reconsider.

elaine October 11, 2012 at 06:38 PM
Brown attacks Warren consistently on who she is -- her heritage, her job, etc. Warren attacks Brown on how he votes. Personally I don't care about heritage, religion, job...but I do care a lot about how Brown has voted. Three cheers for Warren for focusing on the specifics rather than character assassination.
gjmacd October 11, 2012 at 07:40 PM
I keep saying that Brown's yet to discuss his record, and Warren's talked about NOTHING BUT his record. I find it interesting that Brown's first attack is to go after her race... Regardless of whether or not she is Indian (and we know she didn't benefit from this, Harvard's laughed that one off...). I view this as a non-issue. Brown's a dirt bag for just pressing and pressing this. I often wonder what he's like behind closed doors when he has to deal with minorities or worse (scoff) women!
Deanie October 12, 2012 at 01:58 AM
HARDLY! The woman has NO crediable record & is a puppet od Obummers! ALL Liberal & spend, spend ...NO WAY WARREN!
Stumpgrinder October 19, 2012 at 09:43 PM
I love Warren's latest ad on TV. She says that if you don't vote for her, the Dems might lose the majority in the Senate, and if that happens, it's YOUR fault for not voting for her. Talk about throwing the blame on everyone else! Who is this woman who will throw her constituents under the bus?
