1, Today, the same as yesterday. That sounds like an office/industrial complaint, unless you get outside. The National Weather Service predicts clear skies with a high of 75 degrees and a light wind off the Elizabeth Islands. Tonight expect a low temperature of 58 degrees.
2. Word for the day: Fiberhood - a place with extremely fast internet connection. This started with a Google promotion of its new internet venture. It ran a contest among cities. Kansas City won, some neighborhoods signing on to the service, becoming fiberhoods. Google plans to extend the service, at $70 a month, to other places. Which Barnstable village would become the fiberhood? Osterville? Cotuit? Certainly not Hyannis. Hyannisport? Martons Mills? Centerville? Craigville? Barnstable Village? I’m betting on the latter because of the county infrastructure. Well, it’s a while away. Comment on who needs, can afford, the new connection.
3. Gen. George McClellan received intelligence this day in 1862, notes detailing Robert E. Lee’s plan of attack around Sharpsburg, Maryland,”Special Order 191.” Was it a feint left intentionally, wrapped in a package of cigars, for Union troops from Indiana to “discover”? Was it an actual battle plan? McClellan took no action on the information. Four days later, the battle at Antietam Creek cost the lives of 23,000 men, the largest casualty count of any American military engagement anywhere, any time. Historians still debate the reason for McClellen’s hesitation of four days. With the information, if true, as it later proved to be, he could have destroyed Lee’s Army. Lincoln removed him from command. He called the battle stalemate enough of a victory to issue the emancipation proclamation, to block British recognition of the Confederacy. The first Republican president, he defeated his conservative Democrat challenger, McClellan, in 1874.
