Marstons Mills Woman Advocates For New Pool on Cape Cod

Does the Mid-Cape need another swimming pool? Diane Klaiber thinks so.

Klaiber, of Marstons Mills, is advocating a new community pool in the Mid- or Upper-Cape to the Barnstable Recreation Division, the Barnstable Patriot reports.

Klaiber proposed the use of the Sandwich High School swimming pool, which has been closed since January for repairs and will reopen shortly. Klaiber is working on the early stages of a proposal with Chris Cochran, the West Barnstable YMCA aquatics director.

Other locations Klaiber has suggested include the former Marstons Mills School property, Barnstable High School, Hyannis Youth and Community Center, a senior center or "The Pavilion" on Route 28, which is for sale.

She also provided an annual cost estimate of $200,000 provided by the American Swimming Association, the Patriot writes.

"It is clear that Cape Cod needs another pool whether it is at Sandwich, Mashpee or Falmouth or Barnstable,” Klaiber says.

Klaiber says everyone on the Cape should have a place to learn to swim, but there is a dearth of large, community pools.

For example, the YMCA in West Barnstable is the only 25-meter pool in the Mid-Cape that is used by residents of Yarmouth, Barnstable, Sandwich and Falmouth with a focus on families, she says.

“All the towns should come together. It’s a community thing for Cape Cod,” Klaiber said in a phone interview with the Patriot.

Get Involved: Klaiber is looking for other people who would like to help her advocate for another pool in the area. Anyone interested can come to the Aug. 12 meeting at 5:30 p.m. in town hall, she says
