Cape Man Escapes from House Fire, Friend Seeks Funds to Help

"He does not like to ask for help, but he is grateful for every positive that comes his way," says the friend who set up a GoFundMe campaign to help Chris Niland after he was burned out of his Centerville home.

A Cataumet woman is seeking donations to assist a high school classmate who was burned out of his rented home in Centerville last month, suffering smoke inhalation in his escape from the fire.

"He will need food, clothes, lodging and everything that goes into setting up house again. He does not like to ask for help, but he is grateful for every positive that comes his way," wrote Erin C. Healy on the GoFundMe.com crowdfunding website the day after the Dec. 18 fire that left Chris Niland homeless.

Healy has been updating the site, writing last week that Niland has found an off-season rental while he looks for another year-round home.

"He has not yet withdrawn from this fund, but he would like to use the money for a security deposit. May I ask one more time for your generous support of a fellow classmate who is without everything right now except the people who love him and a positive attitude that all will work out," Healy posted.

On Jan. 27, the fund had reached $650 with individual donations ranging from $30 to $100.
