Bank of Cape Cod employees make quilts for A Baby Center

They didn’t have the easiest time threading the small needle hole and lacked some experience at  quilting, but a group of Bank of Cape Cod employees kept their eyes on the big picture – providing some warmth and color to needy babies.

After several months of work, the end result is 16 colorful and creative blankets quilted by the group of employees and donated Wednesday to A Baby Center in Hyannis. The quilts will be given to low-income family households on the Cape and Islands who have babies under the age of three.

“For many of these babies, it may be the only new thing they have,” Mary Pat Piersons, executive director of the center, said when she accepted the quilts at the bank’s Hyannis Main Street location. “This is very special.”

The employees, led by bank accountant Nancy Turgeon and her master sewer sister Jane Barnes, put their skills to work and made quilts with cowboy patterns, race cars and bright pink flowers. Jane donated the material, Bank of Cape Cod furnished a few supplies and the employees did the rest.

A Baby Center, located on Center Street, is a stone’s throw from the bank’s Hyannis branch and employees can often be found volunteering or helping out there. The center provides at no charge, every 30 days, critical basic items like diapers and clothing for infants and toddlers up to the age of three and whose families meet income guidelines as identified by the federal WIC (Women, Infants & Children) program.

“Many families struggle to pay for everything, including heat and not only will these quilts help with that, they are bright and cheery and so sweet,” Piersons said. “We are always touched by the generosity of the bank and its employees.”

The employees involved in the quilting effort included Lee Ann Hesse, Nancy Turgeon, Andrea Breen, Ginger Scott, Judi Matson, Tracy Taylor, and Claudette Azar-Kenyon.
