Shaw’s Losing Money, Customers

Shaw’s is losing money while customers leave the store for updated and expanded grocery store chains like Stop and Shop and Whole Foods.

One Shaw’s customer told the Boston Globe that the store’s prices are higher for basics like eggs, milk and bread.

Customers going to other grocery stores for cheaper prices have become a problem for the company. Shaw’s sales fell from $5.3 billion to $3.8 billion in 2012.

In Barnstable the company has faced tough competition from new stores in Hyannis and Sagamore.

Market Basket, a company known for its cheap prices, opened a store in Sagamore in June 2012. The store is a huge draw for Cape residents who often drive far distances to cut down the grocery budget.

Stop and Shop opened a new 65 thousand square foot store in Hyannis further drawing customers from Shaw’s.

Shaw’s will face even more competition this winter. Wholes foods announced in November they plan to open a new store in Hyannis in the former Border’s on Iyannough Rd.

We want to know what you think. Are prices higher at Shaw’s? Where do you shop for the best deals?

Whole Foods won't be a problem. They'll make Shaw's pricing look to be an absolute bargain. That said, Market Basket is KING! I drive 40 miles round trip every week to shop there as I'm saving over 40%-60% from Stop and Shop. Also, the selection is far broader. And the quality of the meats, deli seafood, produce and just about everything else is far better than Stop and Shop. The prepared food is a joke at the new S & S with a small steam table of disgusting looking food at $7 per pound. I get freshly cooked to order subs, chicken, pizza and so much more for so much less. The Stop and Stop in Sandwich now looks like a ghost town. If Market Basket ever comes to Hyannis, WATCH OUT!

On our way to Market Basket from Hyannis right now… And we even have to drive past the new Stop & Shop where our son works!!!!! Shaws is not even close to competitive , and stop & shop Plays too many games with their pricing. I do not have time or patience to deal with the price fluctuations with coupons etc. One day chicken breasts will be $1. 99 a pound, and the next day they could be 3.99 a pound! Really? Please.

I agree about Stop & Shop being congested. The layout is horrible. The aisles are too narrow. It feels like they put 10 pounds of apples in a 5 pound bag. The parking lot was laid out extremely poorly. Access from the parking lot to the building is horrible. The fire lane in front of the building has to be used as a travel lane if two cars are to get past each other. If there is a bus, or someone loading their car in the fire lane… Forget it it's a logjam!

We've discussed the new Market Basket in Sagamore with our friends who have shopped there and have quoted prices to us on common food products.....although some of the prices are below average, we would have to buy in bulk (not economical for two people) and travel from Mashpee.....between time, gas and mileage we don't see the savings for us!!!! Shaw's will either have to figure out new buyers, better market strategies; or sell out to Target, (now that's a suggestion we could use on the Cape!).

YES! YES! YES! WE NEED A TARGET HERE DESPERATELY!! ... and please not a mini target! a nice large super target... how about in the old stop & shop center in hyannis...??! :))

I think they're planning to put a Lowes in the old stop & shop in Hyannis. better quality than Target!
Sunshadow January 27, 2013 at 02:27 PM
WORD IS YARMOUTH IS CONTEMPLATING LOWE'S......... TARGET AND LOWE'S HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON!!!! TARGET IS LIKE AN AFFORDABLE, FRIENDLY-USER DEPARTMENT STORE THAT BRINGS BACK SERVICE AND PRICING FOR THE CUSTOMER, (SOMETHING SEAR'S, PENNEY'S, MACY'S, ETC. HAVE FORGOTTEN!) LOWE'S IS COMPARABLE TO HOME DEPOT. WE COULD ALSO USE A BENNEY'S CLOSER THAN DENNIS (THAT CLOSES DOWN IN THE WINTER!).
