The Florida woman whose exuberantly patterned clothing designs defined coastal chic from Palm Beach to the Vineyard has died in, the New York Times is reporting.
Lilly Pulitzer was 81, according to the Times.
Begininng in the 1960s, when Jacqueline Kennedy was photographed in one of Pulitzer's sleeveless minidresses, and continuing well into the 70s, Pulitzer's colorful summerwear became wardrobe staples for seasonal Martha's Vineyard residents like actress Ruth Gordon, who took her daily strolls in Edgartown wearing "Lilly shifts" and chiffon hair bows.
In the Pink, an Edgartown boutique, carries Lilly Pulitzer-licensed merchandise. But, according to the Times, Pulitzer herself had not been involved in the business beyond approving print designs from her Florida home.
