Known mostly for its arts and crafts, Michaels is taking a foray into reading this spring. The nationwide retailer is holding an in-store book drive between March 21 and April 19 at all of its stores.

The store, which will has a location at 88 Enterprise Road in Hyannis, hopes to collect more than 1 million books to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the United States and Canada.

“Books open new worlds for readers, and, as a top destination for kids’ creative and educational supplies, we want to help bring that opportunity to young people who are served by Boys & Girls Clubs of America,” said Philo Pappas, Michaels’ Executive Vice President of Merchandising. “We hope our customers will join us in our efforts to donate a million books to these worthy recipients.”

Stores will have $1 classic novels, including “Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” “The Call of the Wild,” “Little Women” and “Black Beauty” available for purchase that customers can donate. But you can also drop off gently used books at any U.S. Michaels location.

This is the third year the craft store has held the book drive, donating 640,000 in 2013 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of North America. New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, a Boys & Girls Clubs of America Hall of Fame member, and his wife Amber, are the 2014 celebrity supporters of the campaign.

“Boys & Girls Clubs had a profound effect on my life, and I am happy to go to bat for Michaels’ book drive to benefit the kids,” said Sabathia. “I hope customers will help Michaels hit this effort out of the park.”
