Area Gas Prices Continue To Tumble

New England drivers still paying well above the national average.

As the Christmas travel season approaches, drivers are on the receiving end of some good news relative to gas prices.

According to AAA Southern New England, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas (self-serve) dropped another seven cents this past week, to $3.47.

The good news is that price is 14 cents lower than a month ago. The bad news is, New England drivers are still paying roughly 13 cents higher than the national average and a full 20 cents higher than the price of gas in December 2011.

According to the gas stations surveyed by AAA, prices ranged from $3.33 to $3.75 for unleaded regular self-serve.

ROTFLMAO.... tell that to the Cape Cod drivers who are being ripped off paying 30 cents more.

You got it, Ed, we're getting royally screwed by the greedy bastards here on the Cape. Even in the winter, we get the shaft. Captive audience, indeed.

Sad part no officals are doing anything about it. Two weeks ago Hyannis $3.74 a gallon, 12 miles to Bourne just over the bridge HESS $3.37. That's a 37 cents difference per gallon. It's almost like they have a license to steal. It's a feeding frenzy here on the Cape.

I agree with both Ed & Rick, I paid 3.35 for a gallon of gas in Buzzards Bay. We will be shopping at market basket today & getting. Gas at the same time. Cheaper groceries. & gas I am all for both!

I drive off Cape every Monday for work, before I get home I stop and fill the gas tank (paid $3.23 last Monday) and then shop at all the stores that way on the way home. I am tired of the supermarkets here raising prices in the summer for the tourists, then raising them in the winter because there are no tourists. I spend my hard earned money off Cape. I support the Cape, give to local charities, its hard enough finding year-round work on the Cape never mind paying for the groceries and gas.

We've always been ripped-off here on the Cape with food & gas . I always try to fill up when I'm off-Cape, but that isn't very often. I agree with the other posters about doing my shopping over the bridge also. Sad, but true. Gotta love the Market Basket! They are definately worth the trip every 3 to 4 weeks. I hope they open in Hyannis soon!

Sadly Em, if they do open here, they will be pricing as the others do. The "powers that be" should realize that the Cape is now a year-round place. It should be to their advantage to care for the year-rounders with a bit lower prices off season. But they don't, so I will continue to shop else where. It shouldn't always be about profit !!!

A couple days ago I called the corporate offices of Cumberland Farms and Stop & Shop to complain about the gas prices here on the Cape. Stop & Shop gave me the brushoff and really couldn't care less. The Cumberland Farms executive basically told me that their prices are based on the competition in the area. They said they will keep the price at what the market will bear. He tried to tell me that comparing the price of gas here and off Cape, was like comparing apples and oranges! BS! It's still a gallon of gas!… And the distribution cost is pretty much the same.

Buy gas off cape!!!!!!! Get your food at Market Basket at same time. Stop +Shop gas points are not worth the higher prices. M Basket deli all around $5.00per lb or less!!!
Joan Bassett December 16, 2012 at 05:41 PM
@ Bluefish...Market basket has no zone pricing. Their prices are the in New Bedford , Tauton, everywhere. It will only be win win for those who purchase their groceries on the cape.
Buster December 16, 2012 at 06:24 PM
Everyday (morning) the gas stations call around to find out what the others are going to charge. The big question is where is our representation, our politicians, the ones we voted into office? I would like one local politician with some guts to explain how the gas stations are getting away with the high prices.
bluefish December 17, 2012 at 02:03 AM
Joan, as I am not a customer with Market Basket I did not know this. I do Thank you for telling me as I go by there frequently and now will most likely be shopping there. Its really too bad that things are like this, but saving money is where its at now.

Menauhant December 17, 2012 at 03:19 PM

I agree! I fill my tank before coming back on cape; I think it's totally unfair they have the right to overcharge year round residents!!!
Buster December 17, 2012 at 07:54 PM
Btw... gas $3.17 Dedham, MA. Despicable that this price gouging is allowed on Cape Cod. Where is our representation? Hello... anyone home?
em December 17, 2012 at 10:48 PM
I also contacted Hess and Cumberland Farms by email....of course, got no response.
bluefish December 18, 2012 at 03:17 AM
Paid $3.21 a gallon today in Whitman (cheapest gas ever and always), take that Hess on Cape Cod !!! Also, Thank you to a few folks here, I stopped at Market Basket on the way home too. Wow, the difference in prices is astounding ! Guess I can do ALL my shopping on Mondays now off the Cape ! Sorry to all the hard workers here though, it just happens to be about MY profit at the end of the week too ! You know, maybe we should be contacting the Attorney General and let them in on the "price gouging" here on the Cape ?
