UPDATE: Outages Spread; More than 20,000 Without Power on Cape

More than 20,000 NStar customers--a majority in the Barnstable area--are without power across the Cape Saturday evening, the Cape Cod Times reports.

About 73 percent of the power company's customers in Barnstable – 12,599 – are without power as of 6:50 p.m., according to the company’s outage map.

An additional 6,237 customers have lost power in Hyannis, specifically. In Sandwich, 984 customers – or 11 percent of the clientele – have lost power. Currently, Mashpee has 2,786 customers in the dark, which equates to 24 percent.

Every town except Truro and Bourne has a few additional outages, although in significantly smaller numbers.

It seems the outages are spreading. Around 6:30 p.m., about only 10,000 customers had lost power. In thirty minutes, the number has more than doubled.

The cause of the outages has not been identified.
