'Wings of Freedom' Tour Coming to Barnstable Municipal Airport
The nationwide tour is running in honor of World War II veterans and will bring rare bomber and fighter aircrafts for display in Hyannis next month.
A special World War II aircraft tour is making a stop in Hyannis this September.
The 110-city "Wings of Freedom" tour, now in its 24th year, will fly into Barnstable Municipal Airport for a display from Wednesday, Sept. 25 to Friday, Sept. Sept. 27.
Among the featured aircraft will be the Boeing B-17 Fortress "Nine O Nine" WWII Heavy Bomber, the Consolidated B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft" WWII Heavy Bomber and the P-51 Mustang fighter, according to tour coordinator Julie Smith of Hyannis, who said she is eager to bring the tour to the Cape.

"I was brought up with a father who was in the Air Force and was a Military and WWII Historian," Smith said. "As a result, I've attended numerous air shows and watched historical movies. This began my interest in Military and WWII history. The work and time it takes to get the word out Cape-wide is more than rewarded by observing the reactions and emotions of veterans and their families who come out and visit the tour, many of whom haven't seen these aircraft in over sixty years. I sometimes travel throughout the country with the Foundation as a volunteer crew member. Talk about a fabulous experience."
Attendees will have the opportunity to visit, explore and learn more about unique aircraft from the WWII era during the following display hours:
