I-93 Southbound will be closed through Boston overnight Tuesday, April 8 into Wednesday April 9. This is all due to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s maintenance schedule to accommodate roadway sweeping, as well as wall and sign washing.

What Drivers Need to Know

I-93 Southbound traffic will be detoured off the highway at Rte. 38/Mystic Ave onto surface streets and allowed to re-enter I-93 Southbound at the Herald Street on ramp south of the Mass Pike. Traffic destined for I-90 Westbound will access the I-90 Westbound on-ramp just south of Kneeland Street. This closure gives maintenance crews access to the Lower Deck, Zakim Bridge and O’Neill Tunnel Southbound.

Maintenance crews and contractors, along with State Police and Boston Police will begin set-up for the closure on Tuesday evening at 11 p.m. The full closure will begin at midnight on Wednesday and last until 5 a.m. Wednesday morning. In the event of inclement weather, the closure will be postponed.

The next planned closure will be I-93 Northbound from Tuesday, April 15 at 11 p.m. to Wednesday, April 16 at 5 a.m.

Closures from Now Through End of 2014

Now that spring is here, MassDOT will resume these complete closures on i-93 through Boston on the first and third Tuesday of each month beginning in May through the end of the year weather permitting. The current schedule is:

  • First Tuesday into Wednesday - the closure will be southbound
  • Third Tuesday into Wednesday - the closure will be northbound

Couldn't find a picture of the bridge from the last ten years after it was opened?
