Are You Ready? Town Offers Tips for Hurricane Season

Although Superstorm Sandy seems like just yesterday, New England's hurricane season has officially begun again.

Hurricane season spans from June 1 through Nov. 30, according to the National Weather Service. About 12 tropical storms are expected each year, while three may become major hurricanes (category 3 or higher).

Here are some tips for preparing for a hurricane, as provided by the Town of Barnstable's Channel 18.

  • Create a disaster plan for yourself, your family and your pets. Review it with each member of the family and be sure everyone is in agreement.
  • Make a disaster survival kit.
  • Find the nearest emergency shelters and learn about the risks for potential flooding in your area.
  • Be willing to follow emergency officials' implicit directions.
In the event there is inclement weather, the town encourages the public to:

  • Secure all outdoor objects.
  • Stay away from windows.
  • Fill your tubs and sinks with water, should the water line break.
  • Help vulnerable neighborhoods
  • Evacuate if directed
As always, be sure to tune in to the town's emergency alert radio station at 99.9 FM to stay up to date on the threat of severe weather.
