Katie's Ice Cream, Bank of Cape Cod host fundraiser for BHS prom

Katie’s Ice Cream and Bank of Cape Cod are pairing up for the Barnstable High School prom. Well, sort of.

The two businesses are joining forces to raise money for a post-prom party at BHS. On Friday, April 25, 10 percent of all proceeds from sales at Katie’s will support Celebration, an annual senior prom event which costs about $20,000 to produce. Bank of Cape Cod is planning to support the effort by providing a grant to match the funds raised at Katie’s.

Julie Kimball, owner of Katie’s, said she wanted to support the event since many if her employees through the years have enjoyed a safe and fun after prom Celebration. She said any effort to support a “safe” after-prom party that is alcohol free and drug free is a good thing. She doesn’t know what to expect since it is her first foray into fundraising in this manner, but decided to jump in.

“When we learned about what Julie was doing at Katie’s, we thought what a great way to support one of our customers who is also a fellow Hyannis Main Street business,” said Timothy T. Telman, President and CEO of Bank of Cape Cod. “By joining forces, we thought we could increase exposure for the event and raise even more money. It’s win-win.”

“I’m thrilled to have Bank of Cape Cod hop on board,” said Kimball. “I think it is terrific for the kids to help make this prom safe. It is such a great event and we are looking forward to having a great fundraiser.”

Katie’s Ice Cream will be open on Friday, April 25, from noon to 8 p.m. Any ice cream, merchandise or other purchase will be counted toward the day’s total for the fundraiser. Deb Nelson, one of the chairs of the Celebration event, said every dollar raised will be put to good use.

“It’s just awesome how businesses step up,” Nelson said. “We need anywhere from $20,000-$30,000 for this multi-staged event with entertainment, prizes, games, you name it. It is all about providing an alcohol free and drug free environment for prom goers starting at 11 p.m. and going to 5 a.m. It is a major production and so important to our school community.”
