Animal Rescue League’s Spay Waggin’ Rolls into Hyannis on December 10
The Animal Rescue League of Boston’s (ARL) Spay Waggin’ will make a stop at Cape Maid Farms on Route 28 in Hyannis on Tuesday, December 10. The mobile spay/neuter unit performs affordable surgeries and other preventive healthcare for dog and cat owners in financial need on the Cape and South Shore.
“Many people cannot afford to spay/neuter their pets,” explains Cheryl Traversi, shelter and community medicine program coordinator at the ARL. “They love their pets and want to do what’s best for them, but need the kind of help provided by the Spay Waggin’ to keep them happy and healthy.”
Staffed by an Animal Rescue League veterinarian and two trained veterinary technicians, the Spay Waggin’ features a preparation area, a fully equipped surgical suite, and a recovery ward that can accommodate up to 40 animals.

Each appointment includes a physical exam, spay (females) or neuter (males), rabies vaccine, distemper vaccine, and flea/ear mite treatment if necessary. The appointment costs $75 for cats and varies for dogs, depending on the sex of the dog. Heartworm testing for dogs is available for an additional $20.

All cats and dogs must be between the ages of two months and five years. The program accepts dogs 50 pounds and under, with restrictions. Special programs for pit bulls are also available.
This year to date, the Spay Waggin’ has treated over 3,300 cats and dogs at its monthly stops at locations throughout Barnstable, Bristol, and Plymouth counties. The unit will return to the Cape on January 7, 2014. For a complete schedule, visit arlboston.org/spay-waggin/.
When the ARL first launched the program close to 14 years ago, Spay Waggin’was the first mobile animal spay/neuter vehicle to operate in Massachusetts. The ARL has serviced Cape Cod since 1921 through programs such as Spay Waggin’ and its Brewster adoption center.
