5 Things: Higher Cigarette Tax Becomes Effective Today

1. Starting today, cigarette taxes have been raised by $1 a pack. And, are you're wondering why you aren't seeing cigarettes at CVS anymore? Selling tobacco in a health-care store or instituion was recently prohibited in Barnstable. 

2. The public is invited to skate at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center today at 1:30 p.m. for a small admission and rental fee. Skate sharpening is also available. 

3. The town of Barnstable is offering 12 apartment units to low- and moderate-income families through a lottery selection system. Officials will explain the lottery system this morning at 9:30 a.m. at town hall.

4. Looking for a job? The new Kohl's under construction in Southwind Plaza is now hiring 125 part-time workers. For more information, attend one of their upcoming hiring job fairs. But remember: Walk-in candidates are welcome, but only those who have scheduled an interview in advance on the Kohl's website are guaranteed an interview. 

5. Check out DJ Reggie Morgan's tunes of the 1940s and 50s this evening from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Osterville Library. The free concert is part of the library's ongoing summer concert series.
